On-shell amplitudes are invariant under field redefinitions. Nonderivative field redefinitions have a natural interpretation as coordinate transformations on the target manifold. General field redefinitions, which may involve derivatives, can be viewed as coordinate transformations on the field configuration manifold. We present a unified perspective for the geometry of both the target manifold and the field configuration manifold for scalar effective field theories. In both cases, we identify vertices that

We compute the symplectic cohomology of Milnor fibers of isolated quasihomogeneous cAn singularities. In addition, we use our computations to distinguish their links as contact manifolds and to provide further evidence to a conjecture of Evans and Lekili.

Safeguarding biodiversity requires a detailed understanding of the biosphere, especially regarding the distribution and state of habitats. Citizen science data offer a rich source of useful information, but they usually only contain partial records of species assemblages, as predominantly opportunistic observations of individual species are reported. We explored the capacity of recommender systems—a class of algorithms originally developed for tasks like recommending movies to users on streaming platforms—t

Over the past decade, advances in sensing and information technologies have enabled industries to collect large amounts of data. Yet, decision-making often remains driven by the intuition of domain experts who rely on simplistic analyses and short-term considerations. This frequently leads to suboptimal decisions that fail to account for long-term effects, particularly in complex, interconnected systems. Current data-driven strategies typically focus on immediate objectives, overlooking relational structure

The numerical solution of the many-body problem, which involves interacting electrons and ions, is a key challenge in condensed matter physics, chemistry, and materials science. Traditional methods to solve the multicomponent quantum Hamiltonian are usually specialized for one kind of particles - electrons or ions - and can suffer from a methodological gap when applied to the other ones. This work extends the self-consistent harmonic approximation, a proven successful technique for simulating quantum ions a

In origami theory, the problem of rigid maps consists in finding a paper folding from the two-dimensional space onto the three-dimensional space. This problem is an example of a first-order fully nonlinear equation. In this article, we present a general variational framework to solve the problem of rigid maps with Dirichlet boundary conditions. The numerical framework relies on the introduction of a regularized objective function and the penalization of the constraints. A splitting algorithm is advocated fo

Solutes and drugs are transported in the circulatory system by the blood for which absorption processes occur at the arterial walls. The comprehension, modeling, and numerical simulation of these phenomena, both in physiological and pathological conditions, represents a relevant topic of interest in biomedical applications. These phenomena can be represented by heterogeneous coupled models; specifically the Navier-Stokes equations representing the blood flow are coupled with the advection-diffusion equation

The Open Support Platform for Environmental Research (OSPER) has been launched to take forward key data management components developed under the Swiss Experiment platform project to achieve improved usability and a wider scope. With this project, we aim to connect users to data and their context, an area identified during SwissEx as having the greatest potential impact on the research community. OSPER has a clear focus on providing the technology for data storage, management and exploitation with a special

The Human Brain Project (HBP) is a candidate project in the European Union's FET Flagship Program, funded by the ICT Program in the Seventh Framework Program. The project will develop a new integrated strategy for understanding the human brain and a novel research platform that will integrate all the data and knowledge we can acquire about the structure and function of the brain and use it to build unifying models that can be validated by simulations running on supercomputers. The project will drive the dev

Genomic bioinformatics is a growing and developing field. Indeed, data analysis is becoming an integrative and essential part of any quantitative biological experiment as the technologies evolve and the wet lab methods used generate larger and larger quantities of data. Yet few standards have emerged and a plethora of analytical tools exist, none of which are established as a standard. The difficulties arise early on, even before processing any genomic data, as one first needs to visualize it. Several visua

We address the problem of recognizing the visual focus of attention (VFOA) of meeting participants from their head pose and contextual cues. The main contribution of the paper is the use of a head pose posterior distribution as a representation of the head pose information contained in the image data. This posterior encodes the probabilities of the different head poses given the image data, and constitute therefore a richer representation of the data than the mean or the mode of this distribution, as done i

The unexpected but facile prepn. of the Ag salt of the least coordinating [(RO)3Al-F-Al(OR)3]- anion (R = C(CF3)3) by reaction of Ag[Al(OR)4] with one equiv. of PCl3 is described. The mechanism of the formation of Ag[(RO)3Al-F-Al(OR)3] is explained based on the available exptl. data as well as on quantum chem. calcns. with the inclusion of entropy and COSMO solvation enthalpies. The crystal structures of (RO)3Al(OC4H8), Cs[(RO)2(Me)AlFAl(Me)(OR)2], Ag(CH2Cl2)3[(RO)3AlFAl(OR)3] and Ag(h2-P4)2[(RO)3AlFAl(OR)3

Particle filtering is now established as one of the most popular method for visual tracking. Within this framework, two assumptions are generally made. The first is that the data are temporally independent given the sequence of object states. In this paper, we argue that in general the data are correlated, and that modeling such dependency should improve tracking robustness. The second assumption consists of the use of the transition prior as proposal distribution. Thus, the current observation data is not

This paper describes quantitatively the influence of the self-field and the cross-sectional geometry on the effective critical current and the ac losses in transport current applications of non-twisted multifilamentary Bi-2223/Ag conductors. The results are obtained with finite element method simulations. The numerical implementation includes an anisotropic model for the dependence of the critical current density Jc and the power index n on the local parallel and perpendicular magnetic field components. The

A fundamental statistical problem is to indicate which of two hypotheses is better supported by the data. Statistics designed for this purpose are called weight of evidence. In this paper we study the problem of robust weights of evidence, optimal in their performance while robust in the infinitesimal sense of the influence function.

Sampling theory has prospered extensively in the last century. The elegant mathematics and the vast number of applications are the reasons for its popularity. The applications involved in this thesis are in signal processing and communications and call out to mathematical notions in Fourier theory, spectral analysis, basic linear algebra, spline and wavelet theory. This thesis is divided in two parts. Chapters 2 and 3 consider uniform sampling of non-bandlimited signals and Chapters 4, 5, and 6 treat differ

In this paper the problem of estimating the intrinsic dimension of a data set is investigated. An approach based on the Grassberger-Procaccia's algorithm has been studied. Since this algorithm does not yield accurate measures in high-dimensional data sets, an empirical procedure has been developed. Grassberger-Procaccia's algorithm was tested on two different benchmarks and was compared to a TRN-based method.

We report on X-ray photoemission of core levels, valence band studies using angle-integrated photoemission, and magnetization measurements of ruthenocuprate and SrRuO3 polycrystalline samples. The data indicate that the RuO2 planes are the source of the energetics of the magnetic ordering. We also find that adding hydrogen leads to changes in the many-body response on both the CuO2 and EuO planes.
