Dry liquid crystal marbles are structures that consist of cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) droplets prepared by the mixture of chiral-doped thermotropic LCs encapsulated by cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) that have been dried under ambient conditions. The ch ...

Modern power distribution systems are experiencing a large-scale integration of Converter-Interfaced Distributed Energy Resources (CIDERs). Their presence complicates the analysis and mitigation of harmonics, whose creation and propagation may be amplified ...

Dielectric Elastomer Actuators (DEAs) have emerged as versatile and promising devices for a multitude of applications, including soft robotics, haptic interfaces, and artificial muscles. DEAs are an interesting soft actuator technology due to their high en ...

This paper proposes a data-driven control design method for nonlinear systems that builds upon the Koopman operator framework. In particular, the Koopman operator is used to lift the nonlinear dynamics to a higher-dimensional space where the so-called obse ...

Literature on linear induction motors (LIMs) has proposed several approaches to model the behavior of such devices for different applications. In terms of accuracy and fidelity, field analysis-based models are the most relevant. Closed-form or numerical so ...

Time-domain solutions of Maxwell’s equations in homogeneous and isotropic media are paramount to studying transient or broadband phenomena. However, analytical solutions are generally unavailable for practical applications, while numerical solutions are co ...

A novel approach for robust controller synthesis, which models uncertainty as an elliptical set, is proposed in the paper. Given a set of frequency response functions of linear time-invariant (LTI) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems, the approac ...

Frequency Response Function (FRF)-based control synthesis methods for Linear Time-Invariant (LTI) systems have been widely used in control theory and industry. Recently, there has been renewed interest in these methods, employing numerical optimization too ...

This work studies the nearshore hydrodynamics of a shallow turbulent flow entering a laterally unconfined quiescent ambient with a sloping bottom boundary. Examples of such flow are neutrally buoyant ebb tidal jets and hyperpycnal river plumes entering ope ...

Depleted Monolithic Active Pixel Sensor (DMAPS) sensors developed in the Tower Semiconductor 180 nm CMOS imaging process have been designed in the context of the ATLAS ITk upgrade Phase-II at the HL-LHC and for future collider experiments. The "MALTA-Czoch ...

Prediction of ground motion triggered by earthquakes is a prime concern for both the seismology community and geotechnical earthquake engineering one. The subfield occupied with such a problem is termed site response analysis (SRA), its one-dimensional fla ...

We present a CMOS-compatible double gate and label-free C-reactive protein (CRP) sensor, based on silicon on insulator (SOI) silicon nanowires arrays. We exploit a reference subtracted detection method and a super-Nernstian internal amplification given by ...

We introduce HP, an implementation of density-functional perturbation theory, designed to compute Hubbard parameters (on-site U and inter-site V ) in the framework of DFT+U and DFT+U+V. The code does not require the use of computationally expensive superce ...

Model-free data-driven computational mechanics (DDCM) is a new paradigm for simulations in solid mechanics. The modeling step associated to the definition of a material constitutive law is circumvented through the introduction of an abstract phase space in ...

Multiscale phenomena are involved in countless problems in fluid mechanics. Coating flows are known to exhibit a broad variety of patterns, such as wine tears in a glass and dripping of fresh paint applied on a wall. Coating flows are typically modeled und ...

The focus of this study is to evaluate the effects of porous media inside the gas flow channel of Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells (PEMFC) on four different output parameters of voltage, power density, pressure drop, and Nusselt number (Nu) considering ...

Isogeometric analysis (IGA) was introduced to integrate methods for analysis and computer-aided design (CAD) into a unified process. High-quality parameterization of a physical domain plays a crucial role in IGA. However, obtaining high-quality parameteriz ...

In the field of model order reduction for frequency response problems, the minimal rational interpolation (MRI) method has been shown to be quite effective. However, in some cases, numerical instabilities may arise when applying MRI to build a surrogate mo ...

Numerical solution of the involved governing equations confirm that the commonly used two orthogonal sets of gain- and loss-probes in BOTDA, differently affect the evolution of the pump state-of- polarization, thereby potentially compromising the minimizat ...

This thesis is an in-depth treatment of water vapor transport in snowpacks and its impacts on snow structure. The aim is to better understand this transport process and to lay the basis for a model representation in physics-based multi-layer snow models. O ...
