Nanoparticles (NPs) have wide applications in physical and chemical processes, and their individual properties (e.g., shape, size, and composition) and ensemble properties (e.g., distribution and homogeneity) can significantly affect the performance. Howev ...

Real-time control of electric grids is a novel approach to handling the increasing penetration of distributed and volatile energy generation brought about by renewables. Such control occurs in cyber-physical systems (CPSs), in which software agents maintai ...

Remote Procedure Calls are widely used to connect datacenter applications with strict tail-latency service level objectives in the scale of µs. Existing solutions utilize streaming or datagram-based transport protocols for RPCs that impose overheads and li ...

The conventional wisdom is that aggressive networking requirements, such as high packet rates for small messages and microsecond-scale tail latency, are best addressed outside the kernel, in a user-level networking stack. In particular, dataplanes borrow d ...

Reliable packet delivery within stringent delay constraints is of primal importance to industrial processes with hard real-time constraints, such as electrical grid monitoring. Because retransmission and coding techniques counteract the delay requirements, ...

Gossip-based protocols have proven very efficient for disseminating high-bandwidth content such as video streams in a peer-to-peer fashion. However, for the protocols to work, nodes are required to collaborate by devoting a fraction of their upload bandwid ...

Nowadays there is an increasing interest in the field of implantable biosensors. The possibility of real-time monitoring of the human body from inside paves the way to a large number of applications and offers wide opportunities for the future. Within this ...

Delivering multiview video content over present packet networks poses multiple challenges. First, the best effort nature of the Internet exposes media packets to variable bandwidth, loss, and delay as they traverse the network. Second, the prediction depen ...

Implementations of state machine replication are prevalently using variants of Paxos or other leader-based protocols. Typically these protocols are also leader-centric, in the sense that the leader performs more work than the non-leader replicas. Such prot ...

Linearizability is a key design methodology for reasoning about implementations of concurrent abstract data types in both shared memory and message passing systems. It provides the illusion that operations execute sequentially and fault-free, despite the a ...

This work studies how to build wireless network protocols that achieve better reliability, lower delay and higher throughput than existing alternatives by using network coding and by exploiting the broadcast nature of the wireless channel. In the first par ...

Distance bounding protocols enable a device to establish an upper bound on the physical distance to a communication partner so as to prevent location spoofing, as exploited by relay attacks. Recently, Rasmussen and Cˇapkun (ACM-CCS’08) observed that these ...

The low quality of wireless links leads to perpetual packet losses. While an acknowledgment mechanism is generally used to cope with these losses, multiple retransmissions nevertheless occur. Opportunistic routing limits these retransmissions by taking adv ...

Embedded sensors and actuators are revolutionizing the way we perceive and interact with the physical world. Current research on such Cyber-Physical Systems (CPSs) has focused mostly on distributed sensing and data gathering. The next step is to move from ...

We consider the fault-tolerant consensus problem in radio networks with crash-prone nodes. Specifically, we develop lower bounds and matching upper bounds for this problem in single-hop radios networks, where all nodes are located within broadcast range of ...

The performance of the networking stack in an operating system depends on the overhead incurred by two of its components: the per-byte overhead incurred in data-touching operations, and the per-packet overhead of protocol processing and other operating sys ...

This paper presents GosSkip, a self organizing and fully distributed overlay that provides a scalable support to data storage and retrieval in dynamic environments. The structure of GosSkip, while initially possibly chaotic, eventually matches a perfect se ...

In this work we present a multi-path routing strategy that guarantees in-order packet delivery for Networks on Chips (NoCs). We present a design methodology that uses the routing strategy to optimally spread the traffic in the NoC to minimize the network b ...

To increase network capacity, it may not be sufficient to just increase the capacity of the networks. It may be necessary to reduce the network overhead bits, to leave more room for the data bits, to increase the network capacity. As network functions beco ...

This thesis is at the crossing of object-orientation and reliable distributed systems, and contributes to integrate those two research fields. Existing distributed programming environments can be characterised according to whether they rely on object conce ...
