Nowadays mobile phones have become indispensable, as they have been endowed with many of the capabilities that a user was able to achieve previously with the help of PCs only. Among the functions that mobile phones perform we identify audio and video calls ...

In-band full-duplex systems promise to further increase the throughput of wireless systems, by simultaneously transmitting and receiving on the same frequency band. However, concurrent transmission generates a strong self-interference signal at the receive ...

Wireless communications are currently faced with two main challenges. The first challenge stems from the enormous number of Internet of Things (IoT) devices that transmit very small amounts of data. The second challenge is the need for ever-increasing data ...

Several technologies, such as WiFi, Ethernet and power-line communications (PLC), can be used to build residential and enterprise networks. These technologies often co-exist; most networks use WiFi, and buildings are readily equipped with electrical wires ...

This thesis addresses challenges in elicitation and aggregation of crowd information for settings where an information collector, called center, has a limited knowledge about information providers, called agents. Each agent is assumed to have noisy private ...

The present thesis deals with the design of a planar antenna array for the communication between a civil aircraft (Dassault's Falcon) and an Inmarsat satellite. The final goal is to provide high speed Internet access in X/Ku-Band (8-12GHz / 12-18GHz), and ...

Nowadays the demand for communication over the wireless medium is significantly increasing, while the available wireless spectrum is already limited. In this thesis, we introduce new practical physical layer designs that employ node cooperation for more ef ...

In this dissertation, we consider the problem of assigning spectrum to wireless local-area networks (WLANs). In line with recent IEEE 802.11 amendments and newer hardware capabilities, we consider situations where wireless nodes have the ability to adapt n ...

We consider the problem of jointly allocating chan- nel center frequencies and bandwidths for IEEE 802.11 wireless LANs (WLANs). The bandwidth used on a link affects sig- nificantly both the capacity experienced on this link and the interference produced o ...

We study the communication network of an on-campus active distribution network (ADN) that comprises phasor measurement units (PMUs) connected to medium-voltage transformers. Within stringent time delays and with minimal loss the PMUs periodically transfer ...

While every network node only relays messages in a traditional communication system, the recent network coding (NC) paradigm proposes to implement simple in-network processing with packet combinations in the nodes. NC extends the concept of "encoding" a me ...

Mobile Ad hoc Networks (MANETs) are wireless networks without fixed infrastructure based on the cooperation of independent mobile nodes. The proliferation of these networks and their use in critical scenarios (like battlefield communications or vehicular n ...

Access networks include modems, home gateways, and DSL Access Multiplexers (DSLAMs), and are responsible for 70-80% of total network-based energy consumption. In this paper, we take an in-depth look at the problem of greening access networks, identify root ...

One of the most promising bands for long-range radiocommunications is the Ka-band (25-40 GHz). This is due to the existence of a natural radio transmission window around 30 GHz. Both terrestrial and satellite transmission systems are planned on this freque ...

We investigate a vibrated granular system composed of millimeter-size glass beads. When the system is submitted to a perturbation with decreasing intensity, below the fluidization limit, it evolves in a way similar to glass-forming liquids until it reaches ...

Wireless community networks that operate in the unlicensed spectrum have emerged as a low-cost alternative for providing high-speed wireless data services. By using WiFi access points that are provided and managed by community members, wireless community n ...

With the increased dynamics of modern life, the efficiency and reliability of everyday services is emerging to be a fundamental concern. On the other hand, modern telecommunication technologies, like wireless Internet access, are penetrating all segments o ...

Wireless social community networks formed by users with a WiFi access point have been created as an alternative to traditional wireless networks that operate in the licensed spectrum. By relying on access points owned by users for access, wireless communit ...
