Due to a complex three-dimensional flow pattern, the outer banks of river bends are predisposed to erosion. When endangering civil structures, preventing measures to mitigate this erosion are thus required. Vertical ribs at protection walls for scour reduc ...

Transient heat transfer experiments typically employ thermochromic liquid crystals to temporally map surface temperatures. The desired heat transfer coefficient is then calculated from the solution of Fourier’s 1D transient heat conduction equation which i ...

This paper demonstrates that the impact of nanosecond pulsed dielectric barrier discharge (ns-DBD) actuators on the structure of the boundary layer can be investigated using quantitative convective heat transfer measurements. For the experiments, the flow ...

Simulating arterial trees in the cardiovascular system can be made by the help of different models, depending on the outputs of interest and the desired degree of accuracy. In particular, one-dimensional fluid-structure interaction models for arteries are ...

It is known that, when the immersed boundary method (IBM) is implemented within spectral-like methods, the Gibbs oscillation seriously deteriorates the calculation of derivatives near the body surface. In this paper, a radial basis function (RBF) based smo ...

Wall-bounded turbulent flows at high Reynolds numbers have become an increasingly active area of research in recent years. Many challenges remain in theory, scaling, physical understanding, experimental techniques, and numerical simulations. In this paper ...

A field experiment – the Snow Horizontal Array Turbulence Study (SnoHATS) – has been performed over an extensive glacier in Switzerland in order to study small-scale turbulence in the stable atmospheric surface layer, and to investigate the role, dynamics ...

The paper investigates the influence of relative bend curvature on secondary flow, energy losses, and turbulence in sharp open-channel bends. These processes are important in natural streams with respect to sediment transport, the bathymetry and planimetry ...

We adapt an existing asymptotic method to set up a one-dimensional model for the fall of a closed filament in an in finite fluid in the Stokes regime. Starting from the single-layer integral representation of the fluid velocity around the filament, we get, ...
