One major challenge in distributed learning is to efficiently learn for each client when the data across clients is heterogeneous or non iid (not independent or identically distributed). This provides a significant challenge as the data of the other client ...

In addition to individual practices and access to water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) facilities, housing conditions may also be associated with the risk of diarrhea. Our study embraced a broad approach to health determinants by looking at housing depriv ...

We introduce the elliptical Ornstein-Uhlenbeck (OU) process, which is a generalisation of the well-known univariate OU process to bivariate time series. This process maps out elliptical stochastic oscillations over time in the complex plane, which are obse ...

In the context of discrete choice modeling, the extraction of potential behavioral insights from large datasets is often limited by the poor scalability of maximum likelihood estimation. This paper proposes a simple and fast dataset-reduction method that i ...

The increasing availability of sensing techniques provides a great opportunity for engineers to design state estimation methods, which are optimal for the system under observation and the observed noise patterns. However, these patterns often do not fulfil ...

Despite the widespread empirical success of ResNet, the generalization properties of deep ResNet are rarely explored beyond the lazy training regime. In this work, we investigate scaled ResNet in the limit of infinitely deep and wide neural networks, of wh ...

Deep-learning-based digital twins (DDT) are a promising tool for data-driven system health management because they can be trained directly on operational data. A major challenge for efficient training however is that industrial datasets remain unlabeled. T ...

Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) and Equivalent Circuit Models (ECMs) are widely used to characterize the impedance and estimate parameters of electrochemical systems such as batteries. We use a generic ECM with ten parameters grouped to model ...

Severe thunderstorms cause substantial economic and human losses in the United States. Simultaneous high values of convective available potential energy (CAPE) and storm relative helicity (SRH) are favorable to severe weather, and both they and the composi ...

We develop an exchange rate target zone model with finite exit time and non-Gaussian tails. We show how the tails are a consequence of time-varying investor risk aversion, which generates mean-preserving spreads in the fundamental distribution. We solve ex ...

Snow plays a crucial role in processes regulating ecosystems, the climate, and human development. Mountain snowpack in particular has great relevance for downstream communities. Knowledge about the distribution and properties of the snowpack thus help in p ...

Our dataset consists of very high-resolution aerial images (50cm) and a digital elevation model (50cm) that covers approx. 2300 km2 of land above 2000m altitude in the southwestern part of Switzerland. Our land cover labels focus on alpine land cover that ...

As large, data-driven artificial intelligence models become ubiquitous, guaranteeing high data quality is imperative for constructing models. Crowdsourcing, community sensing, and data filtering have long been the standard approaches to guaranteeing or imp ...

There is a growing recognition that electronic band structure is a local property of materials and devices, and there is steep growth in capabilities to collect the relevant data. New photon sources, from small-laboratory-based lasers to free electron lase ...

Generative artificial intelligence (AI) has made unprecedented advances in vision language models over the past two years. These advances are largely due to diffusion-based generative models, which are very stable and simple to train. These diffusion model ...

Technology mapping transforms a technology-independent representation into a technology-dependent one given a library of cells. Even if technology libraries contain multi-output cells, state-of-the-art techniques fully exploit single-output cells only. Mul ...

In social learning, a network of agents assigns probability scores (beliefs) to some hypotheses of interest, based on the observation of streaming data. First, each agent updates locally its belief with the information extracted from the current data throu ...

In tokamak experiments, sufficiently strong E x B flow shear reduces turbulent transport, thereby improving the prospects for fusion power plants. It is therefore of great importance to efficiently explore parameter space to find where strong plasma flow c ...

Aims. We validate a semi-analytical model for the covariance of the real-space two-point correlation function of galaxy clusters. Methods. Using 1000 PINOCCHIO light cones mimicking the expected Euclid sample of galaxy clusters, we calibrated a simple mode ...

Image noise can often be accurately fitted to a Poisson-Gaussian distribution. However, estimating the distribution parameters from a noisy image only is a challenging task. Here, we study the case when paired noisy and noise-free samples are accessible. N ...
