A mixture of two amphiphiles with fluorescent head groups can be used as a sensing ensemble for the pattern-based analysis of aminoglycoside antibiotics. In buffered aqueous solution, the amphiphiles form a dynamic mixture of micellar aggregates. In the pr ...

The interfaces of water micro- and nanodroplets drive environmental, medical, catalytic, biological, and chemical biphasic processes. The interfacial droplet structure and electrostatics greatly determine the reactivity and efficiency of these processes. D ...

Hydrogen embrittlement (HE) is a ubiquitous and catastrophic mode of fracture in metals. Here, embrittlement is considered as an intrinsic ductile-brittle transition at the crack tip, where H at the crack tip can reduce the stress intensity K-Ic for cleava ...

Single-molecule Forster resonance energy transfer (FRET) and photoinduced electron transfer (PET) have developed into versatile and complementary methods for probing distances and dynamics in biomolecules. Here we show that the two methods can be combined ...

The yield strength of random metal alloys, i.e. alloys with random occupation of the crystalline lattice sites by the elemental constituent atoms all considered as solutes, is primarily understood as controlled by solute/dislocation interactions. Solute-so ...

Fluorescent nanoparticles (FNPs) are obtained in water by self-assembly from a polymeric ionic liquid, fluorescent carboxylate moiety, and a surfactant through two main supramolecular interactions, that is, ionic bonds and hydrophobic/hydrophilic interacti ...

Fluorescence lifetime imaging (FLI) is increasingly recognized as a powerful tool for biochemical and cellular investigations, including in vivo applications. Fluorescence lifetime is an intrinsic characteristic of any fluorescent dye which, to a large ext ...

Conventional therapeutics are often limited by their targeting ability, resulting in harmful and potential fatal side-effects for the patients. Recently, new strategies have been developed to improve target specificity of drugs in order to generate more ef ...

The mechanism of binding of the surfactant-cobalt(III) complex, cis-[Co(phen) 2(C 14H 29NH 2)Cl](ClO 4) 2{dot operator}3H 2O (phen = 1,10-phenanthroline, C 14H 29NH 2 = tetradecylamine) with bovine serum albumin (BSA) was investigated by UV-vis absorption, ...

It is difficult to develop suitable fluorescent probes for live-cell nanoscopy, but a general strategy is now reported that can transform regular fluorophores into fluorogenic probes with excellent cell permeability and low unspecific background signals. U ...

Surfactant liposome interactions have been previously studied through different methods and techniques. We present here a classical physical chemistry study on liposome solutions added to destabilizing agents at concentrations well above the solubilization ...

The characteristics of the binding reaction of surfactant-cobalt(III) complex, cis-[Co(phen)(2)(C14H29NH2)]Cl-2 center dot 3H(2)O (phen =1,10-phenanthroline, C14H29NH2 = tetradecylamine) with human serum albumin (HSA) were studied by fluorescence and UV-vi ...

Polymer-coated liposomes, particularly poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG)-substituted liposomes, have emerged as long-circulating carrier systems for drug delivery and diagnostic purposes. A rapid synthesis of three different types of multifunctional lipids with ...

Miniaturization has been a driving force in many areas of science and technology, most notably in the electronics industry. Droplet-based microfluidics, a methode to produce emulsion drops in a controlled way and at high-throughputs, enables the miniaturiz ...

The integration of renewable energy in the built environment, improving the energy efficiency of buildings, and optimizing distributed energy systems are three interconnected activities that are central for the transition to sustainable cities. Here, a met ...

We propose a new technique to measure the volume of adherent migrating cells. The method is based on a negative staining where a fluorescent, non-cell-permeant dye is added to the extracellular medium. The specimen is observed with a conventional fluoresce ...

This thesis is a study on the molecular structure of the interface of nanometer-sized oil droplets dispersed in water, a system known as oil-in-water nanoemulsion. The motivation for this research is the large significance of the interfacial nanostructures ...

In the last few years, an intense research effort has focused on the synthesis of fluorescent nanopigments for functional inks, light harvesting, tagging, tracing, (bio)labeling, imaging, and lighting applications. Moreover, combined with dielectric matric ...

We consider sets L = {l(1),..., l(n)} of n labeled lines in general position in R-3, and study the order types of point sets {p(1),..., p(n)} that stem from the intersections of the lines in L with (directed) planes Pi, not parallel to any line of L, that ...

Despite increasing attention for the recently found ferro- and antiferroelectric properties, the polymorphism in hafnia- and zirconia-based thin films is still not sufficiently understood. In the present work, we show that it is important to have a good qu ...
