Maximum-Entropy Distributions offer an attractive family of probability densities suitable for moment closure problems. Yet finding the Lagrange multipliers which parametrize these distributions, turns out to be a computational bottleneck for practical clo ...

The benefits and limitations inherent to the 2D post-processing of measurements from Brillouin optical time-domain analyzers are investigated from a fundamental point of view. In a preliminary step, the impact of curve fitting on the precision of the estim ...

Inspired by applications in sports where the skill of players or teams competing against each other varies over time, we propose a probabilistic model of pairwise-comparison outcomes that can capture a wide range of time dynamics. We achieve this by replac ...

An accurate covariance matrix is essential for obtaining reliable cosmological results when using a Gaussian likelihood. In this paper we study the covariance of pseudo-C-l estimates of tomographic cosmic shear power spectra. Using two existing publicly av ...

The emergence of wide bandgap power devices has brought the attention back to the flying capacitor (FC) multilevel inverters with a large number of stages, in an effort to increase the power density by minimizing the passive components. The main challenge ...

We consider the problem of estimating the autocorrelation operator of an autoregressive Hilbertian process. By means of a Tikhonov approach, we establish a general result that yields the convergence rate of the estimated autocorrelation operator as a funct ...

We present a method for fast evaluation of the covariance matrix for a two-point galaxy correlation function (2PCF) measured with the Landy-Szalay estimator. The standard way of evaluating the covariance matrix consists in running the estimator on a large ...

Covariance operators are fundamental in functional data analysis, providing the canonical means to analyse functional variation via the celebrated Karhunen-Loeve expansion. These operators may themselves be subject to variation, for instance in contexts wh ...

We consider the problem of positive-semidefinite continuation: extending a partially specified covariance kernel from a subdomain Omega of a rectangular domain I x I to a covariance kernel on the entire domain I x I. For a broad class of domains Omega call ...

The quantification of uncertainties can be particularly challenging for problems requiring long-time integration as the structure of the random solution might considerably change over time. In this respect, dynamical low-rank approximation (DLRA) is very a ...

In this paper, we propose a new approach for sampling from probability measures in, possibly, high-dimensional spaces. By perturbing the standard overdamped Langevin dynamics by a suitable Stratonovich perturbation that preserves the invariant measure of t ...

Collapsing cell complexes was first introduced in the 1930's as a way to deform a space into a topological-equivalent subspace with a sequence of elementary moves. Recently, discrete Morse theory techniques provided an efficient way to construct deformatio ...

This paper considers regression tasks involving high-dimensional multivariate processes whose structure is dependent on some known graph topology. We put forth a new definition of time-vertex wide-sense stationarity, or joint stationarity for short, that g ...

There is sustained and widespread interest in understanding the limit, if there is any, to the human life span. Apart from its intrinsic and biological interest, changes in survival in old age have implications for the sustainability of social security sys ...

In this manuscript we consider denoising of large rectangular matrices: given a noisy observation of a signal matrix, what is the best way of recovering the signal matrix itself? For Gaussian noise and rotationally-invariant signal priors, we completely ch ...

This paper deals with the resolution of inverse problems in a periodic setting or, in other terms, the reconstruction of periodic continuous-domain signals from their noisy measurements. We focus on two reconstruction paradigms: variational and statistical ...
