Many blockchain-based algorithms, such as Bitcoin, implement a decentralized asset transfer system, often referred to as a cryptocurrency. As stated in the original paper by Nakamoto, at the heart of these systems lies the problem of preventing double-spen ...

Programmable self-assembly of modular robots offers promising means for structure formation at different scales. Rule-based approaches have been previously employed for distributed control of stochastic self-assembly processes. The assembly rate in the pro ...

We propose a versatile framework based on random search, Sparse-RS, for score-based sparse targeted and untargeted attacks in the black-box setting. Sparse-RS does not rely on substitute models and achieves state-of-the-art success rate and query efficienc ...

Database systems access memory either sequentially or randomly. Contrary to sequential access and despite the extensive efforts of computer architects, compiler writers, and system builders, random access to data larger than the processor cache has been s ...

We present multiversion timestamp locking (MVTL), a new genre of multiversion concurrency control algorithms for serializable transactions. The key idea behind MVTL is simple: lock individual timestamps instead of locking objects. After presenting a generi ...

This paper develops high-order accurate entropy stable (ES) adaptive moving mesh finite difference schemes for the two- and three-dimensional special relativistic hydrodynamic (RHD) and magnetohydrodynamic (RMHD) equations, which is the high-order accurate ...

Neuroscience incorporates knowledge from a range of scales, from single molecules to brain wide neural networks. Modeling is a valuable tool in understanding processes at a single scale or the interactions between two adjacent scales and researchers use a ...

Non-volatile memory (NVM) promises fast, byte-addressable and durable storage, with raw access latencies in the same order of magnitude as DRAM. But in order to take advantage of the durability of NVM, programmers need to design persistent objects which ma ...

Bluetooth is a pervasive wireless technology specified in an open standard. The standard defines Bluetooth Classic (BT) for high-throughput wireless services and Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) very low-power ones. The standard also specifies security mechanism ...

Optimizing resource utilization in target platforms is key to achieving high performance during DNN inference. While optimizations have been proposed for inference latency, memory footprint, and energy consumption, prior hardware-aware neural architecture ...

The use of transactions in distributed systems dates back to the 70's. The last decade has also seen the proliferation of transactional systems. In the existing transactional systems, many protocols employ a centralized approach in executing a distributed ...

We study the optimization of large-scale, real-time ridesharing systems and propose a modular design methodology, Component Algorithms for Ridesharing (CAR). We evaluate a diverse set of CARs (14 in total), focusing on the key algorithmic components of rid ...

There is a trend towards increased specialization of data management software for performance reasons. The improved performance not only leads to a more efficient usage of the underlying hardware and cuts the operation costs of the system, but also is a ga ...

Millimeter wave (mmWave) radars are becoming a more popular sensing modality in self-driving cars due to their favorable characteristics in adverse weather. Yet, they currently lack sufficient spatial resolution for semantic scene understanding. In this pa ...

The increase in the number of cores in processors has been an important trend over the past decade. In order to be able to efficiently use such architectures, modern software must be scalable: performance should increase proportionally to the number of all ...

Establishing the scalability of a concurrent algorithm a priori, before implementing and evaluating it on a concrete multi-core platform, seems difficult, if not impossible. In the context of search data structures however, according to all practical work ...

Personalized healthcare devices enable low-cost, unobtrusive and long-term acquisition of clinically-relevant biosignals. These appliances, termed Wireless Body Sensor Nodes (WBSNs), are fostering a revolution in health monitoring for patients affected by ...

We introduce OPTIK, a new practical design pattern for designing and implementing fast and scalable concurrent data structures. OPTIK relies on the commonly-used technique of version numbers for detecting conflicting concurrent operations. We show how to i ...
