Modern energy systems are more and more based on integrated technologies in a world evolving towards increasing concerns not only for economics but also for environmental issues with a growing focus on resources and emissions. In parallel, information tech ...

Green hydrogen production via electrochemical water splitting is a promising approach for future sustainable energy and industry. Among the existing water electrolysis technologies, solid oxide steam electrolysis exhibits the highest electrical efficiency, ...

This article describes a study of beam radiation striking particle beds of randomly packed, spherical par-ticles. The current study is focused on concentrating solar power receivers which use solid particles as a heat transfer medium, but results are appli ...

The depletion of fossil fuel sources has encouraged the authorities to use renewable resources such as wind energy to generate electricity. A backup/storage system can improve the performance of wind turbines, due to fluctuations in power demand. The novel ...

Facades are the primary interface controlling the flow of solar energy in buildings and affecting their energy balance and environmental impact. Recently, large-scale 3D printing (3DP) of translucent polymers has been explored as a technique for fabricatin ...

Studies have shown that the exposure to daylight can have substantial visual/non-visual benefits for building occupants. To optimise daylighting provision while maintaining a comfortable visual environment, daylighting control systems have been investigate ...

Automated shading systems have the potential to exploit daylight in buildings to save energy of artificial lighting and cooling loads and improve occupants'f visual comfort. This paper investigates the daylighting performance of automated Venetian blinds b ...

This thesis deals with different aspects of renewable energy transformation and storage concepts and connects them. Although renewable energy installations are growing worldwide, their use is limited by storage technologies. As such, water splitting for hy ...

Taking into account the high efficiency of solar thermal collectors and the fact that heating demands represent around 80% of the total energy needs in residential buildings, it is of interest to integrate solar thermal systems to supply HVAC services. How ...

Solar-driven high-temperature electrolysis (HTE) and thermochemical cycles (TCC) are two promising pathways for fuel processing and energy storage, which are considered in this thesis. The goals of this thesis are: i) offering engineering guidelines at sys ...

Woody biomass, a renewable energy resource, accumulates solar energy in form of carbon hydrates produced from atmospheric CO2 and H2O. It is, therefore, a means of CO2 mitigation for society as long as the biogenic carbon released to the atmosphere when de ...

Solar energy offers a great potential for integration with industrial processes, which conventionally rely on fossil fuels to provide energy. The seasonal, daily, and regional dependence of solar energy alongside the scarcity of space or financial resource ...

The building sector plays a crucial role in the ongoing energy transition due to its significant share of global energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions, especially when combined with the estimation that 70% of the world's population will be living ...

The foreseen important increase of the penetration of distributed renewable energies technologies into the electricity distribution grid is expected to lead to some major challenges. On the one hand, a large and synchronous production could lead in certain ...

Concentrated solar energy is an ideal energy source for hightemperature energy conversion processes such as concentrated solar power generation, solar thermochemical fuel production, and solar driven hightemperature electrolysis. Indirectly irradiated sola ...

A new generation of solar collectors is based on thermochromic thin film technology, where the remarkable optical changes of vanadium dioxide, through its reversible semiconductor-to-metal phase transition, are exploited. This study reports on the infrared ...

Beam-down concentrating solar tower (BCST) is known for its merits in easy installation and maintenance as well as lower convection heat loss of the central receiver (CR) when comparing to a traditional concentrated solar tower system. A point-line-couplin ...

This study presents a methodology for evaluating the effects of simultaneous temperature and illuminance set-point variations on energy consumption. Different illuminance levels are achieved with an innovative dynamic shading control algorithm that allows ...

In this article, three different modes of a novel integrated system would be evaluated by the application of high temperature Thermal Energy Storage (TES) to produce electricity, cooling, and freshwater. Freshwater is produced using the reverse osmosis (RO ...

We present a techno-economic analysis of solar-driven hightemperature electrolysis systems used for the production of hydrogen and synthesis gas. We consider different strategies for the incorporation of solar energy, distinguished by the use of differing ...
