The ability to make compliant physical interactions enables robots to robustly contact with the environment. This plays a significant role in advancing robotic hands which must constantly interact with the world, often with large uncertainties and variatio ...

Dynamical flow networks serve as macroscopic models for, e.g., transportation networks, queuing networks, and distribution networks. While the flow dynamics in such networks follow the conservation of mass on the links, the outflow from each link is often ...

Non-convex constrained optimization problems have become a powerful framework for modeling a wide range of machine learning problems, with applications in k-means clustering, large- scale semidefinite programs (SDPs), and various other tasks. As the perfor ...

Distributed energy systems play a significant role in the integration of renewable energy technologies. The Energy Internet links a fleet of distributed energy systems to each other and with the grid. Interactions between the distributed energy systems via ...

Strong quantum correlations in matter are responsible for some of the most extraordinary properties of materials, from magnetism to high-temperature superconductivity, but their integration in quantum devices requires a strong, coherent coupling with photo ...

Orthogonal maps are the solutions of the mathematical model of paper-folding, also called the origami problem. They consist of a system of first-order fully nonlinear equations involving the gradient of the solution. The Dirichlet problem for orthogonal ma ...

Optimization is a fundamental tool in modern science. Numerous important tasks in biology, economy, physics and computer science can be cast as optimization problems. Consider the example of machine learning: recent advances have shown that even the most s ...

We propose a novel approach to automatically tracking elliptical cell populations in time-lapse image sequences. Given an initial segmentation, we account for partial occlusions and overlaps by generating an over-complete set of competing detection hypothe ...

Lymphatic growth (lymphangiogenesis) within lymph nodes functions to promote dendritic cell entry and effector lymphocyte egress in response to infection or inflammation. Here we demonstrate a crucial role for lymphotoxin-beta receptor (LT beta R) signalin ...

Tracking the ball is critical for video-based analysis of team sports. However, it is difficult, especially in low resolution images, due to the small size of the ball, its speed that creates motion blur, and its often being occluded by players. In this pa ...

Object tracking in image sequences is a key challenge in computer vision. Its goal is to follow objects that move or evolve over time while preserving the identity of each object. However, most existing approaches focus on one class of objects and model on ...

The aim of the paper is to present a theory agenda for component-based design based on results that motivated the development of the BIP component framework, to identify open problems and discuss further research directions. The focus is on proposing a sem ...

In this paper, we show that tracking different kinds of interacting objects can be formulated as a network-flow Mixed Integer Program. This is made possible by tracking all objects simultaneously and expressing the fact that one object can appear or disapp ...

The polynomial Hirsch conjecture states that the vertex-edge diameter of a d-dimensional polyhedron with n facets is bounded by a polynomial in d and n. For the special case where the polyhedron is defined as the set of points satisfying a system Ax ≤ b of ...

The computational modeling of face-to-face interactions using nonverbal behavioral cues is an emerging and relevant problem in social computing. Studying face-to-face interactions in small groups helps in understanding the basic processes of individual and ...

Voids and He bubbles are strong obstacles to dislocation, which induce hardening and loss of ductility. In Fe, molecular dynamics simulation is used to investigate the basic mechanisms of the interaction between a moving edge dislocation and a void or He b ...

In the present context of finding ways to decrease CO2 emissions linked with human activity, district energy systems including polygeneration energy conversion technologies are likely to play a major role. District energy systems meet the heating, hot wate ...

A review. The interplay between carbohydrates, lipids, and proteins dets. the stability and flexibility as well as the adhesive and responsive features of the surfaces of all cells. The mol. understanding of the interactions among and between the different ...

A new approach combining electrostatic and covalent bonds was established for the formation of resistant capsules with long-term stability under physiol. conditions. Three kinds of interactions were generated in the same membrane: (1) electrostatic bonds b ...

The aim of this thesis has been to assess the potential of branched polymers as novel exfoliants for layered silicates and their application in polyurethanes. Three different types of –OH functional branched polymers have been studied: dendrimers, hyperbra ...
