Most modern in-memory online transaction processing (OLTP) engines rely on multi-version concurrency control (MVCC) to provide data consistency guarantees in the presence of conflicting data accesses. MVCC improves concurrency by generating a new version o ...

Key-Value Stores (KVS) are foundational infrastructure components for online services. Due to their latency-critical nature, today’s best-performing KVS contain a plethora of full-stack optimizations commonly targeting read-mostly, popularity-skewed worklo ...

The isolation level Multiversion Read Committed (RC), offered by many database systems, is known to trade consistency for increased transaction throughput. Sometimes, transaction workloads can be safely executed under RC obtaining the perfect isolation of ...

The inception of object-oriented programming introduces a category of bugs related to object construction: initialization errors. Every newly created object goes through several initialization states: starting from a state where all fields are uninitialize ...

In order to get a better understanding of the interaction of plasma microinstabilities and associated turbulence with specific modes, an antenna is implemented in the global gyrokinetic Particle-In-Cell (PIC) code ORB5. It consists in applying an external ...

Scala heavily relies on a number of object-oriented abstractions to support its feature-rich collections library. There are known techniques that optimize those abstractions away in just-in-time (JIT) compilers, but applying them in the ahead-of-time (AOT) ...

Modern large-scale data platforms manage colossal amount of data, generated by the ever-increasing number of concurrent users. Geo-replicated and sharded key-value data stores play a central role when building such platforms. As the strongest consistency m ...

Systems and method for a task scheduler with dynamic adjustment of concurrency levels and task granularity are disclosed for improved execution of highly concurrent analytical and transactional systems. The task scheduler can avoid both over commitment and ...

There is a trend towards increased specialization of data management software for performance reasons. The improved performance not only leads to a more efficient usage of the underlying hardware and cuts the operation costs of the system, but also is a ga ...

The increase in the number of cores in processors has been an important trend over the past decade. In order to be able to efficiently use such architectures, modern software must be scalable: performance should increase proportionally to the number of all ...

In order to improve their power efficiency and computational capacity, modern servers are adopting hardware accelerators, especially GPUs. Modern analytical DMBS engines have been highly optimized for multi-core multi-CPU query execution, but lack the nece ...

The atomic commit problem lies at the heart of distributed database systems. The problem consists for a set of processes (database nodes) to agree on whether to commit or abort a transaction (agreement property). The commit decision can only be taken if al ...

Transactions can simplify distributed applications by hiding data distribution, concurrency, and failures from the application developer. Ideally the developer would see the abstraction of a single large machine that runs transactions sequentially and neve ...

This paper presents elastic transactions, an appealing alternative to traditional transactions, in particular to implement search structures in shared memory multicore architectures. Upon conflict detection, an elastic transaction might drop what it did so ...

Database systems access memory either sequentially or randomly. Contrary to sequential access and despite the extensive efforts of computer architects, compiler writers, and system builders, random access to data larger than the processor cache has been s ...

We present a lightweight library for testing concurrent Scala programs by systematically exploring multiple interleavings between user-specified operations on shared objects. Our library is targeted at beginners of concurrent programming in Scala, runs on ...

The use of transactions in distributed systems dates back to the 70's. The last decade has also seen the proliferation of transactional systems. In the existing transactional systems, many protocols employ a centralized approach in executing a distributed ...

A priori, locking seems easy: To protect shared data from concurrent accesses, it is sufficient to lock before accessing the data and unlock after. Nevertheless, making locking efficient requires fine-tuning (a) the granularity of locks and (b) the locking ...

Programming languages are increasingly compiled to multiple runtimes, each featuring their own rich structures such as their object model. Furthermore, they need to interact with other languages targeting said runtimes. A language targeting only one runtim ...

We present a new code assistance tool for integrated development environments. Our system accepts as input free-form queries containing a mixture of English and Java, and produces Java code expressions that take the query into account and respect syntax, t ...
