Increasing evidence suggests that the process of alpha-synuclein (alpha-syn) aggregation from monomers into amyloid fibrils and Lewy bodies, via oligomeric intermediates plays an essential role in the pathogenesis of different synucleinopathies, including ...

Cells are extremely complex systems able to modify actively their metabolism and behaviour in response to environmental conditions and stimuli, such as pathogenic agents or drugs. The comprehension of these responses is central to understand the molecular ...

Increasing evidence suggests that amyloid polymorphism gives rise to different strains of amyloids with distinct toxicities and pathology-spreading properties. Validating this hypothesis is challenging due to a lack of tools and methods that allow for the ...

Background: A wide class of human diseases and neurodegenerative disorders, such as Alzheimer's disease, is due to the failure of a specific peptide or protein to keep its native functional conformational state and to undergo a conformational change into a ...

The integration of renewable energy in the built environment, improving the energy efficiency of buildings, and optimizing distributed energy systems are three interconnected activities that are central for the transition to sustainable cities. Here, a met ...

This thesis presents a systematic study of how different types monolayer-protected AuNPs interact with amyloid fibers. We report a class of amphiphilic gold nanoparticles capable of adsorbing onto specific surface features on these types of protein fibers. ...

Amyloid formation of the protein α-synuclein promotes neurodegeneration in Parkinson's disease. The normal function of α-synuclein includes synaptic vesicle transport and fusion, and the protein binds strongly to negatively charged vesicles in vitro. Here, ...

Accumulation of amyloid-beta (A beta) peptides and amyloid plaque deposition in brain is postulated as a cause of Alzheimer's disease (AD). The precise pathological species of A beta remains elusive although evidence suggests soluble oligomers may be prima ...

Passive immunization against toxic misfolded proteins could offer protection against neurodegenerative disease. LathuiliSre et al. report the development of a retrievable device to encapsulate cells secreting recombinant anti-amyloid-beta antibodies. When ...

We consider sets L = {l(1),..., l(n)} of n labeled lines in general position in R-3, and study the order types of point sets {p(1),..., p(n)} that stem from the intersections of the lines in L with (directed) planes Pi, not parallel to any line of L, that ...

Despite increasing attention for the recently found ferro- and antiferroelectric properties, the polymorphism in hafnia- and zirconia-based thin films is still not sufficiently understood. In the present work, we show that it is important to have a good qu ...

Alzheimer s disease (AD) is a devastating neurodegenerative disease characterized by strong cognitive impairment and memory loss. These symptoms are caused by neuronal death, induced by two pathological hallmarks: extracellular senile plaques composed of a ...

Rationalizing the structure and structure–property relations for complex materials such as polymers or biomolecules relies heavily on the identification of local atomic motifs, e.g., hydrogen bonds and secondary structure patterns, that are seen as buildin ...

A wide consensus based on robust experimental evidence indicates pyroglutamylated amyloid-beta isoform (A beta pE3-42) as one of the most neurotoxic peptides involved in the onset of Alzheimer's disease. Furthermore, A beta pE3-42 co-oligomerized with exce ...

Designing compounds that bind to the acidic patch of the nucleosome core particle (NCP) is an emerging therapeutic approach that can inhibit the binding of key chromatin factors. Pretreatment of human ovarian carcinoma, A2780, cells with RAPTA-T, an antime ...

Today, more than 40 million people worldwide are affected by neurodegenerative disorders. Onset of these diseases is associated with insoluble fibrillar protein aggregates, termed amyloids. The molecular origin and the link between amyloid formation and di ...

This paper presents a solution to the problem of path following control for autonomous marine vehicles (AMVs) subject to input constraints and constant ocean current disturbances. We propose two nonlinear control strategies: the first is obtained by using ...

Amyloids are insoluble protein fibrillar aggregates. The importance of characterizing their aggregation has steadily increased because of their link to human diseases and material science applications. In particular, misfolding and aggregation of the Josep ...

Centrioles are evolutionarily conserved cylindrical cell organelleswith characteristic radial symmetry. Despite their considerable size (400 nm x 200 nm, in humans), genetic studies suggest that relatively few protein components are involved in their assem ...

A new methodology for producing hyperpolarized C-13 nuclei in small organic systems via parahydrogen induced polarization (PHIP) is proposed: ADAPT (Alternating Delays Achieve Polarization Transfer). The theoretical foundation of the process is investigate ...
