Advanced wave engineering demands robust, efficient, and new-degree-of-freedom manipulations in wave intrinsic properties like amplitude, phase, polarization, and even spatial structure. To tackle this, this thesis advances photonic wave manipulation by sy ...

In the last decade, aluminum nitride (AlN) has proven to be an attractive material for both linear and nonlinear integrated photonics, due to its large transparency window, its low propagation losses and the presence of both second- and third-order nonline ...

The integration of 2D materials with optical fibers enables multifunctional fiber devices, such as polarizers, modulators, and sensors. Recent advances in direct vapor deposition growth further enhance light‐2D material interactions to centimeter‐scale len ...

Applications such as optical clocks, gas spectroscopy, and optical coherent tomography stand to benefit significantly from the integration of on-chip supercontinuum sources. Materials exhibiting both second- and third-order nonlinearities are particularly ...

The diversity of experimentally observed nonlinear coherent and partially coherent optical structures, including breathing, zero-dispersion, and switching wave states in driven optical microresonators, is mainly provided by cavity dispersion engineering. R ...

We report a novel approach to distributed optical fiber sensing that achieves strain-only measurement with no intrinsic temperature cross-sensitivity. This is accomplished by filling the microstructured cladding of a photonic crystal fiber with a simple ga ...

Despite diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) evidence for widespread fractional anisotropy (FA) reductions in the brain white matter of patients with bipolar disorder, questions remain regarding the specificity and sensitivity of FA abnormalities as opposed to o ...

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a highly disabling psychiatric condition that may arise after exposure to acute and severe trauma. It is a highly prevalent mental disorder worldwide, and the current treatment options for these patients remain limit ...

Structure determination of amorphous materials remains challenging, owing to the disorder inherent to these materials. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) powder crystallography is a powerful method to determine the structure of molecular solids, but disorder ...

Weber et al. provide evidence in support of a stress-diathesis model of functional neurological disorders. They identify trauma history in the form of emotional neglect as a psychological risk factor, and reduced hippocampus and amygdala volume as a predis ...

Optical parametric amplification is a promising alternative to traditional erbium-doped amplifiers, offering unidirectional, low-noise, and broadband amplification. Here we present an integrated continuous-traveling-wave parametric amplifier that surpasses ...

BACKGROUND: Bipolar disorder (BD) is associated with cortical and subcortical structural brain abnormalities. It is unclear whether such alterations progressively change over time, and how this is related to the number of mood episodes. To address this que ...

Real-world samples of graphene often exhibit various types of out-of-plane disorder-ripples, wrinkles and folds-introduced at the stage of growth and transfer processes. These complex out-of-plane defects resulting from the interplay between self-adhesion ...

Schizophrenia is a chronic and disabling mental illness characterized by a disordered sense of self. Current theories suggest that deficiencies in the sense of control over one’s actions (Sense of Agency, SoA) may underlie some of the symptoms of schizophr ...

BACKGROUND: Patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD) typically present emotion dysregulation (ED) when faced with adversity. However, it is argued that altered stress response may be more influenced by ED than BPD-specific traits. Here, we inves ...

Psychotic symptoms are among the most debilitating and challenging presentations of severe psychiatric diseases, such as schizophrenia, schizoaffective, and bipolar disorder. A pathophysiological understanding of intrinsic brain activity underlying psychos ...

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are advanced computational systems for acquiring, storing, analyzing, and visualizing spatial data, enabling comprehensive exploration of geographical relationships and patterns across diverse domains. GIS play a crucia ...

BackgroundDepression and anxiety are known to be associated with stress-induced changes in the immune system. Bothersome tinnitus can be related to stress and often co-occurs with depression and anxiety. This study investigates associations of psychologica ...

Background: Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is the current standard treatment for chronic severe tinnitus; however, preliminary evidence suggests that real-time functional MRI (fMRI) neurofeedback therapy may be more effective. Purpose: To compare the e ...

Technological advancement has been in cadence with material development by improving the purity of single crystals and, at the same time, controlling their imperfections. These capabilities have been especially vital for developing new technolo-gies based ...
