Byzantine agreement allows n processes to decide on a common value, in spite of arbitrary failures. The seminal Dolev-Reischuk bound states that any deterministic solution to Byzantine agreement exchanges Ω(n2) bits. In synchronous networks, with a known u ...

In light of the challenges posed by climate change and the goals of the Paris Agreement, electricity generation is shifting to a more renewable and decentralized pattern, while the operation of systems like buildings is increasingly electrified. This calls ...

The scale and pervasiveness of the Internet make it a pillar of planetary communication, industry and economy, as well as a fundamental medium for public discourse and democratic engagement. In stark contrast with the Internet's decentralized infrastructur ...

Smart contracts have emerged as the most promising foundations for applications of the blockchain technology. Even though smart contracts are expected to serve as the backbone of the next-generation web, they have several limitations that hinder their wide ...

Agent-based simulations have been widely applied in many disciplines, by scientists and engineers alike. Scientists use agent-based simulations to tackle global problems, including alleviating poverty, reducing violence, and predicting the impact of pandem ...

The Dolev-Reischuk bound says that any deterministic Byzantine consensus protocol has (at least) quadratic (in the number of processes) communication complexity in the worst case: given a system with n processes and at most f < n/3 failures, any solution t ...

Distributed systems designers typically strive to improve performance and preserve availability despite failures or attacks; but, when strong consistency is also needed, they encounter fundamental limitations. The bottleneck is in replica coordination, whi ...

This paper presents a novel distributed approach for solving AC power flow (PF) problems. The optimization problem is reformulated into a distributed form using a communication structure corresponding to a hypergraph, by which complex relationships between ...

In this paper, we consider the first eigenvalue.1(O) of the Grushin operator.G :=.x1 + |x1|2s.x2 with Dirichlet boundary conditions on a bounded domain O of Rd = R d1+ d2. We prove that.1(O) admits a unique minimizer in the class of domains with prescribed ...

For the first time, a real-time capable NBI code, which has a comparable fidelity to the much more computationally expensive Monte Carlo codes such as NUBEAM, has been coupled to the discharge control system of a tokamak. This implementation has been done ...

With the advent of the Square Kilometre Array Observatory (SKAO), scientists will be able to directly observe the Epoch of Reionization by mapping the distribution of neutral hydrogen at different redshifts. While physically motivated results can be simula ...

Machine learning is often cited as a new paradigm in control theory, but is also often viewed as empirical and less intuitive for students than classical model-based methods. This is particularly the case for reinforcement learning, an approach that does n ...

2.5D Systems-on-Package (SoPs) are composed by several chiplets placed on an interposer. They are becoming increasingly popular as they enable easy integration of electronic components in the same package and high fabrication yields. Nevertheless, they int ...

A decision task is a distributed input-output problem in which each process starts with its input value and eventually produces its output value. Examples of such decision tasks are broad and range from consensus to reliable broadcast to lattice agreement. ...

Today, automatic control is integrated into a wide spectrum of real-world systems such as electrical grids and transportation networks. Many of these systems comprise numerous interconnected agents, perform safety-critical operations, or generate large amo ...

Byzantine Reliable Broadcast (BRB) is a fundamental distributed computing primitive, with applications ranging from notifications to asynchronous payment systems. Motivated by practical consideration, we study Client-Server Byzantine Reliable Broadcast (CS ...

The development of an aircraft industrial system is a complex process which faces the challenge of digital discontinuity in multidisciplinary engineering due to various interfaces between different digital tools, leading to extra development time and costs ...

The Dolev-Reischuk bound says that any deterministic Byzantine consensus protocol has (at least) quadratic communication complexity in the worst case. While it has been shown that the bound is tight in synchronous environments, it is still unknown whether ...

The notion of adversary is a staple of distributed computing. An adversary typically models “hostile” assumptions about the underlying distributed environment, e.g., a network that can drop messages, an operating system that can delay processes or an attac ...

The increase in the observed volume in cosmological surveys imposes various challenges on simulation preparations. First, the volume of the simulations required increases proportionally to the observations. However, large-volume simulations are quickly bec ...
