Examining the performance of an existing bridge requires information on several aspects, such as design choices, material properties, and ongoing degradation processes. It often happens that some critical information is not available. The traditional appro ...

Biominerals are used by natural organisms for example as structural supports and optical sensors. They are produced from a limited number of elements and under ambient conditions. Nevertheless, they often possess excellent mechanical properties and sometim ...

The management of existing civil infrastructure is becoming more crucial as a large share of bridges is approaching their theoretical end of service duration. Structural performance monitoring aims to verify bridge safety at a given time, and it should be ...

Every engineering calculation is an approximation of reality, with inevitable uncertainties involved. This fact implies that a reliability verification accounting for the uncertainties is a necessary step in the design and assessment of structures. Nowaday ...

Conventional formworks for concrete curved shells either are expensive, complex and wasteful or have formal restrictions. Using tile vaults (also known as timbrel, Guastavino, thin-tile or Catalan vaults) as stay-in-place formwork for concrete shells could ...

Managing existing civil infrastructure is challenging due to evolving functional requirements, material aging, and climate change. With increasingly limited economic, environmental, and material resources, more sustainable solutions for practical asset man ...

Carbon nanostructures formed through physical synthesis come in a variety of sizes and shapes. With the end goal of rationalizing synthetic pathways of carbon nanostructures as a function of tunable parameters in the synthesis, we investigate how the initi ...

Recent seismic events have showcased the vulnerability of non-structural components to even low- or moderate-intensity earthquakes that occur far more frequently than design-basis ones. Thus, community-critical buildings, such as hospitals, telecommunicati ...

Purpose: T1 Magnetization Prepared Two Rapid Acquisition Gradient Echo (MP2RAGE) with compress sensing (CS) has been proposed as an improvement of the standard MPRAGE sequence with multiple advantages including reduced acquisition time needed to provide a ...

Thirteen palladium-ligand assemblies with different structures and topologies were investigated for the ability to bind lithium ions. In one case, the addition of LiBF4 resulted in a profound structural rearrangement, converting a dincluclear [Pd2L4]2 comp ...

Intelligence involves processing sensory experiences into representations useful for prediction. Understanding sensory experiences and building these contextual representations without prior knowledge of sensor models and environment is a challenging unsup ...

Despite recent advances in the field of cyclic alkyl amino carbenes (CAACs) including a few complementary synthetic strategies affording CAACs with various substitution patterns, the application potential of chiral CAACs to efficiently catalyze asymmetric ...

This paper introduces a computational framework that fosters collaboration between architects, engineers, and contractors by bridging the gap between architectural design, structural analysis, and digital construction. The present research is oriented towa ...

To respond to the rapid introduction and development of calcined clays as supplementary cementitious material (SCM), the toolbox of characterization methods for cementitious materials requires extension to raw clay characterization. Borrowing concepts and ...

One of the many purposes for which social robots are designed is education, and there have been many attempts to systematize their potential in this field. What these attempts have in common is the recognition that learning can be supported in a variety of ...

Field observations and comprehensive life-cycle building assessment suggest that buildings designed according to today's seismic standards meet the life-safety requirement. However, they are prone to economic losses due to repairs in the aftermath of earth ...

ABCG2 is an ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporter whose function affects the pharmacokinetics of drugs and contributes to multidrug resistance of cancer cells. While its interaction with the endogenous substrate estrone-3-sulfate (E1S) has been elucidated ...

Numerical models that can simulate coupled geometric instabilities in steel beam-columns are required for the seismic assessment of certain steel moment-resisting frames. Reliably simulating coupled instabilities requires that the steel material is precise ...

This paper presents a procedure for the extension of the Vulnerability Index Method (VIM) to the seismic assessment of hybrid timber-masonry buildings. The research is based on the execution of a detailed numerical study of this peculiar structural typolog ...

This paper introduces the conceptual design of sustainable timber structures using raw wood. It pre-sents a workflow for systematically generating Nexorades using a tiling method for multi-valence quad subdivided surfaces. The system is designed based on a ...
