In the context of discrete choice modeling, the extraction of potential behavioral insights from large datasets is often limited by the poor scalability of maximum likelihood estimation. This paper proposes a simple and fast dataset-reduction method that i ...

There is sustained and widespread interest in understanding the limit, if there is any, to the human life span. Apart from its intrinsic and biological interest, changes in survival in old age have implications for the sustainability of social security sys ...

The concept of New Brutalism has been the victim of a series of misunderstandings, myths and aporias. The initial intentions, devoid of any principle or dogma, have passed from hand to hand. The original definitionâ if only one can be identifiedâ has be ...

A major challenge in the common approach of hot water generation in residential houses lies in the highly stochastic nature of domestic hot water (DHW) demand. Learning hot water use behavior enables water heating systems to continuously adapt to the stoch ...

Biological oscillators are pervasive in biology, covering all aspects of life from enzyme kinetics reactions to population dynamics. Although their behaviour has been intensively studied in the last decades, the recent advances of high-throughput experimen ...

Adaptive data analysis is known to introduce bias in reported measurements. Russo and Zou [1] recently introduced an information-theoretic framework to study this problem. Herein, this framework is adopted and new dependence measures are introduced to boun ...

We consider the high energy physics unfolding problem where the goal is to estimate the spectrum of elementary particles given observations distorted by the limited resolution of a particle detector. This important statistical inverse problem arising in da ...

Author Summary In recent years, considerable attention has been given to the evolution of drug resistance in the influenza A H1N1 strain. As a major annual cause of morbidity and mortality, combined with the rapid global spread of drug resistance, influenz ...

We use statistical models for mean and extreme values of total column ozone to analyze "fingerprints" of atmospheric dynamics and chemistry on long-term ozone changes at northern and southern mid-latitudes on grid cell basis. At each grid cell, the r-large ...

In a world of increasing exposure of populations to natural hazards, the mapping of extreme rainfall remains a key subject of study. Such maps are required for both flood risk management and civil engineering structure design, the challenge being to take i ...

Cooling of datacenters is estimated to have an annual electricity cost of 1.4 billion dollars in the United States and 3.6 billion dollars worldwide. Currently, refrigerated air is the most widely used means of cooling datacenter’s servers, which typically ...

In this thesis, we study methods to detect, localize and overcome performance problems experienced by end-users in communication networks. These problems are extremely difficult to solve when the only available information are end-to-end data. We first con ...

This study is comprised of seven chapters including a final part of conclusions. The First Chapter attempts to bring this topic into the current debate on the main aspects discussed by the thesis, vis-à-vis urban intermediation in border situations within ...

Variations in the degree of anisotropy in soil hydraulic conductivity with changes in water saturation (S-e) may adversely impact predictability of flow and transport processes. The conceptual "layered cake'' model was extended to consider effects of bulk ...
