Current fatigue load models (FLMs) for road bridges are typically calibrated based on steel and reinforced-concrete bridges. These models are not likely applicable to fiber–polymer composite bridges, primarily because the damage rate—defined as the slope o ...

Nuclear power is a powerful technology that plays an important role in the fight against climate change, and research is continuously engaged in studies that could further improve its safety. After the Fukushima accident, Accident Tolerant Fuels research h ...

This article reviews the main methods to manufacture large-scale composite parts, with a focus on Liquid Composite Molding techniques of thermoset-based fiber reinforced structural parts. As this process relies on the impregnation of a dry textile stack, t ...

The development of reusable fire-safe polymers with a prolonged lifetime heralds the switch for a transition towards circular economy. In this framework, we report a novel phosphonated thermoset which is composed of networked phosphonate esters containing ...

This paper aims to propose a novel approach to assess the multi-crack behavior of layered fiber-polymer composites. The Compliance and R-curves generated from this novel approach were useful to understand the multiple delamination process, enabling to eval ...

Dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs) can be described as compliant capacitors formed by a dielectric elastomer film sandwiched between two electrodes. An applied voltage results in a compressive Maxwell stress, a thickness reduction and thus an expansion ...

Sustainable development has emerged as a paramount consideration in various fields of industry, including construction, to preserve the environment and its finite resources. Lightweight structures, such as fiber-polymer composite structures, address both s ...

The development of new adhesives has allowed to expand the application of bonding into the most diverse industrial fields. This review article presents the commonly used experimental methods for the investigation of mechanical performance of adhesively bon ...

Capillarity plays a crucial role in many natural and engineered systems, ranging from nutrient delivery in plants to functional textiles for wear comfort or thermal heat pipes for heat dissipation. Unlike nano- or microfluidic systems with well-defined por ...

A numerical investigation was carried out to simulate the experimental results previously obtained concerning two-dimensional in-plane crack propagation in laminated glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) plates. The plates were designed with an embedded ci ...

Layered fiber reinforced composite materials are prone to fracture in planes parallel to the direction of fibers leading to extensive delamination or intralaminar fracture. This phenomenon of crack propagation is frequently accompanied by significant incre ...

In this work, resins based on diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) epoxy and a latent hardener, dicyandiamide (DICY), as well as carbon fiber (CF) composites based on them, were prepared with three commercial accelerators: a methylene bis (phenyl dimeth ...

Fatigue delamination growth in composites is accompanied by large scale bridging (LSB) that yields important toughening effects. However, the extent of this mechanism depends on the laminate geometry rendering its modeling a challenging task. This work pre ...

Vacuum Assisted Resin Infusion Molding (VARIM) with low vacuum pressure difference was used to manufacture woven glass fibre-reinforced epoxy resin plates, with a fibre volume fraction of approx. 50 vol% and containing ethyl phenylacetate (EPA)-filled caps ...

We report the promoting effect of Zn on performance of Pt-based catalyst in liquid-phase hydrogenation of 3-nitrostyrene (3-NS) to 3-vinylaniline (3-VA). Bimetallic Pt-Zn nanoparticles (NPs) were prepared within the hypercross-linked polystyrene (HPS) supp ...

Based on current fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composite construction principles, FRP decks fall into two categories: pultruded decks and sandwich decks. Sandwich decks comprise face sheets and either honeycombs or foams reinforced with internal FRP webs ...

The total light transmittance of hand lay-up glass fiber-reinforced polymer laminates for building construction was investigated with a view to two architectural applications: translucent load-bearing structures and the encapsulation of photovoltaic cells ...

The aim of this work was to investigate to what extent the performance of a glass fiberreinforced polymer (GFRP) sandwich slab-bridge with uniform high-density balsa core could be improved in terms of structural efficiency and weight thanks to a more compl ...

The potential effects of high-performance fiber-reinforced polymer thermal breaks for balcony connections on the thermal losses and heating needs of a typical residential building in Switzerland were investigated. In an optimized form, these new thermal br ...

The aim of this work was to investigate to what extent the performance of a glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) sandwich slab-bridge with a uniform high-density balsa core could be improved in terms of structural efficiency and weight by using a more com ...
