Recently, we published an article [1] presenting how the Power Electronics course at the bachelor level is organized by the Power Electronics Laboratory and taught at Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, EPFL, Switzerland. For those avid readers who m ...

The application of radio frequency (RF) vacuum electronics for the betterment of the human condition began soon after the invention of the first vacuum tubes in the 1920s and has not stopped since. Today, microwave vacuum devices are powering important app ...

Two-dimensional (2D) transition metal carbides, and/or nitrides, so-called MXenes, have triggered intensive research interests in applications ranging from electrochemical energy storage to electronics devices. Producing these functional devices by printin ...

Piezoelectrics play a significant role in modern electronics and electric devices. Thermal or mechanical stress on such materials induces a change in polarization generating an electric response, which is the sole effect of why they are so interesting. How ...

The integration of technology in the medical field has greatly improved accuracy in diagnoses, thus leading to more effective treatments. Wearable and implantable medical devices offer great potential for remote patient monitoring, particularly for heart f ...

Owing to the advancements in the area of power electronics, efficient and flexible ac to dc conversion is made possible, bringing back into focus the idea of the dc power transmission at various voltage levels. Several technical and economical factors advo ...

Transient electronics offer a promising solution for reducing electronic waste and for use in implantable bioelectronics, yet their fabrication remains challenging. We report on a scalable method that synergistically combines chemical and photonic mechanis ...

Metal–oxide–semiconductor junctions are the building blocks of modern electronics and can provide a variety of functionalities, from memory to computing. The technology, however, faces constraints in terms of further miniaturization and compatibility with ...

Heart failure is a cardiovascular disease affecting between 1 and 2% of the population of developed countries alone - more than 10 million people - with this number bound to increase due to the ageing of the population. This condition starts to develop its ...

Among the policies to reduce the consequences of GHG emissions, the decarbonization of the electrical, transport, and manufacturing sectors has profoundly changed how the electricity is produced, transmitted, distributed, and consumed, particularly imposin ...

Electrification of the energy section, from generation to end-use, plays an essential role in reducing global CO2 emission. Innovations in power electronics are required to increase conversion efficiency and power density. Gallium nitride (GaN) transistors ...

Helicon current drive (CD), also called fast wave CD in the lower hybrid range of frequencies, has long been regarded as a promising CD tool for reactor grade plasmas. A newly installed MW-level system at DIII-D will be the first test of this technology in ...

The recent trend of an increasing share of renewable energy sources in modern power systems, as well as the integration of power electronics equipment, is shaping the requirements for stable grid infrastructure. These requirements mainly come from the stab ...

Maximizing the efficiency and power density of dc-dc converters demands parallel optimizations in design and control, especially for variable-frequency converters operating over wide frequency ranges. This work presents the full-scale optimization of a kil ...

This paper presents the design of an application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) with all the necessary electronic blocks to read out and control Conjugate Surfaces Flexure Hinge (CSFH) microgrippers. The ASIC was fabricated using a high-voltage 0.35 mu ...

We investigate the structural, electronic, vibrational, power, and transport properties of the beta allotrope of Ga2O3 from first principles. We find phonon frequencies and elastic constants that reproduce the correct band ordering, in agreement with exper ...

The broad applications of ultrawide-band signals and terahertz waves in quantum measurements, imaging and sensing techniques, advanced biological treatments, and very-high-data-rate communications have drawn extensive attention to ultrafast electronics. In ...

Cascode topology which includes a high-voltage GaN and a low-voltage Si transistor is an attractive device concept, which uses the low ON-resistance of GaN while still being compatible with Si gate drivers. It demonstrates the highest threshold voltage amo ...

Recent trends in power system design such as an increasing share of renewable energy sources and integration of power electronics equipment for medium voltage applications are creating different subsystem interactions that require proper investigation, und ...

A major concern associated to the massive connection of distributed energy resources is the increasing share of power electronic interfaces resulting in the global inertia reduction of power systems. The recent literature advocated the use of voltage sourc ...
