We report a technique to produce three-dimensional maps of transparent objects using the Kerr coefficient as a contrast agent. The method is based on the spatial modifications of a probe pattern focused into the medium. (C) 2010 Optical Society of America

Kerr metric

The Kerr metric or Kerr geometry describes the geometry of empty spacetime around a rotating uncharged axially symmetric black hole with a quasispherical event horizon. The Kerr metric is an exact solution of the Einstein field equations of general relativity; these equations are highly non-linear, which makes exact solutions very difficult to find. The Kerr metric is a generalization to a rotating body of the Schwarzschild metric, discovered by Karl Schwarzschild in 1915, which described the geometry of spacetime around an uncharged, spherically symmetric, and non-rotating body.

Effet Kerr

L'effet Kerr est un phénomène de biréfringence créée dans un matériau par un champ électrique. Cela se caractérise par l'existence de deux indices de réfraction différents : un rayon lumineux peut être séparé en deux rayons lorsqu'il entre dans ce matériau. La biréfringence induite varie, contrairement à l'effet Pockels, selon le carré du champ électrique appliqué, c.-à-d. selon son intensité. Les matériaux présentent en général un effet Kerr très peu visible, ce dernier étant plus prononcé dans certains liquides.

Automodulation de phase

L'automodulation de phase (self-phase modulation, souvent abrégé en SPM en anglais) est un effet optique non linéaire d'interaction lumière-matière (gaz, solide, liquide). Une impulsion ultra-courte, lorsqu'elle voyage dans un milieu matériel, induit une variation de l'indice de réfraction de ce milieu par effet Kerr. Cette variation induit à son tour un décalage de phase dans l'impulsion, ce qui conduit à une modification du spectre en fréquence de l'impulsion.
