This work studies the nearshore hydrodynamics of a shallow turbulent flow entering a laterally unconfined quiescent ambient with a sloping bottom boundary. Examples of such flow are neutrally buoyant ebb tidal jets and hyperpycnal river plumes entering ope ...

Purpose The study aims to display the bubbles' evolution in the shear layer and their relationship with the pressure fluctuations. Furthermore, the coherent structures of the first six modes are extracted, in order to provide insight into their temporal an ...

We present the results of laboratory investigations of continuously-fed density currents that propagate first over a smooth horizontal bed and then over a porous substrate of limited length. Inflow discharge, initial excess density, and substrate porositie ...

In pumped-storage reservoirs, turbulent kinetic energy input from plant operation can be considerably high. Flow velocities were measured by Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers near the intake/outlet structure to describe flow patterns induced by pumped-sto ...

Insect flight is characterised by complex time-dependent flows in response to the unsteady wing movements. Biological fliers exploit the unsteady flow fields to modulate aerodynamic forces, thereby displaying unmatched flight performance, especially in hov ...

To understand the behavior of composite fluid particles such as nucleated cells and double emulsions in flow, we study a finite-size particle encapsulated in a deforming droplet under shear flow as a model system. In addition to its concentric particle-dro ...

Gravity currents are geophysical flows responsible of the distal transport of high volumes of sediments. In particular, turbidity currents, a form of gravity currents where sediments in suspension confer the buoyancy that ignites the flow, are the main mec ...

Several self-assembly systems have been developed in recent years, where depending on the capabilities of the building blocks and the controlability of the environment, the assembly process is guided typically through either a fully centralized or a fully ...

Single-point measurements from towers in cities cannot properly quantify the impact of all terms in the turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) budget and are often not representative of horizontally-averaged quantities over the entire urban domain. A series of lar ...

Open flows, such as wakes, jets, separation bubbles, mixing layers, boundary layers, etc., develop in domains where fluid particles are continuously advected downstream. They are encountered in a wide variety of situations, ranging from nature to technolog ...

Y-shape outlet structures are used to release the turbine water into a reservoir. Classical design oftenuses a Y-shape over a certain length and with a specific opening angle. Depending on the geometry, especially in turbine mode, significant undesired flow ...

The ability of a bubble screen to redistribute the flow field and bed morphology in shallow rivers and open channels has been investigated in laboratory experiments. Rising air bubbles generated by a pressurized porous tube situated on the bed induced seco ...

Flow field in shallow waters, which is characterized by its complex mixing process and inherent dynamic nature, is interesting mainly due to its practical importance (e. g. in free flushing operation and sedimentation in large reservoirs). 3D numerical mod ...

We seek to study numerically two-phase flow phenomena with phase change through the finite-element method (FEM) and the arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) framework. This method is based on the so-called one-fluid formulation; thus, only one set of equati ...

The numerical simulation of free-surface flows around sailing boats is a complex topic that addresses multiple mathematical tasks: the correct study of the flow field around a rigid hull, the numerical simulation of the hull dynamics, the deformation of th ...

Surf and swash zone hydrodynamics are complex, being composed of a highly energetic water-air mixture under periodically unsteady motion. Wave-current interactions have a major effect on the results of hydrodynamic simulations, and consequently on predicti ...

In this work we propose a variational reconstruction algorithm for enhancement and denoising of flow fields that is reminiscent of total-variation (TV) regularization used in image processing, but which also takes into account physical properties of flow s ...

Velocity fields in rectangular shallow reservoirs with different length-to-width and expansion ratios were investigated in an experimental study, to evaluate the effect of geometry on the flow field. A wide range of combinations of these two non-dimensiona ...

It is known that, when the immersed boundary method (IBM) is implemented within spectral-like methods, the Gibbs oscillation seriously deteriorates the calculation of derivatives near the body surface. In this paper, a radial basis function (RBF) based smo ...

Large-Scale Particle Image Velocimetry (LSPIV) is an extension of a quantitative imaging technique to measure water surface velocities using simple and inexpensive equipment. This paper describes the implementation of imaged-based LSPIV in eight different ...
