Modern energy systems are more and more based on integrated technologies in a world evolving towards increasing concerns not only for economics but also for environmental issues with a growing focus on resources and emissions. In parallel, information tech ...

This work proposes a method for optimal planning (sizing and siting) energy storage systems (ESSs) in power distribution grids while considering the option of curtailing photo-voltaic (PV) generation. More specifically, for a given PV generation capacity t ...

The depletion of fossil fuel sources has encouraged the authorities to use renewable resources such as wind energy to generate electricity. A backup/storage system can improve the performance of wind turbines, due to fluctuations in power demand. The novel ...

Green hydrogen production via electrochemical water splitting is a promising approach for future sustainable energy and industry. Among the existing water electrolysis technologies, solid oxide steam electrolysis exhibits the highest electrical efficiency, ...

Smart home appliances can time-shift and curtail their power demand to assist demand side management or allow operation with limited power, as in an off-grid application. This letter proposes a scheduling process to start appliances with time-varying deter ...

The foreseen important increase of the penetration of distributed renewable energies technologies into the electricity distribution grid is expected to lead to some major challenges. On the one hand, a large and synchronous production could lead in certain ...

We study a multiperiod optimal power flow (OPF) problem in unbalanced three-phase radial distribution networks with batteries. To address this problem, we first take the resistance-line battery model that treats lossy batteries by adding resistive lines an ...

Lithium-ion batteries are widely implemented as energy storage devices due to their high energy density and low cost. They enabled modern portable electronics and electric ve-hicles, and are key to manage the integration of intermittent renewable electrici ...

The planning of national power systems is traditionally based on long-term forecasts of electricity demand and fuel prices. However, over such long time horizons (20-50 years), these forecasts often prove to be inaccurate. As an example, wrong projections ...

This paper presents a method for the optimal siting and sizing of energy storage systems (ESSs) in active distribution networks (ADNs) to achieve their dispatchability. The problem formulation accounts for the uncertainty inherent to the stochastic nature ...

This paper presents a new model of voltage source converter (VSC)-based battery energy storage systems (BESSs) that interface with power grids. A VSC-based BESS is made up of a series connection of a VSC, its connecting transformer and a BESS. The VSC allo ...

Recognized as a powerful methodology for the evaluation of environmental burdens, life cycle assessment (LCA) must be performed with close-to-reality inputs to be robust and accurate. However, the necessary real-world data is hardly available at the design ...

We consider the problem of controlling the charging of electric vehicles (EVs) connected to a single charging station that follows an aggregated power setpoint from a main controller of the local distribution grid. To cope with volatile resources such as l ...

Current studies and performance labels focus mainly on the operational energy demand of buildings due to heating, cooling, ventilation, lighting, and hot water, but they rarely account for embodied impacts. Performing a life cycle assessment (LCA) on an en ...

Real-time control of electric grids is a novel approach to handling the increasing penetration of distributed and volatile energy generation brought about by renewables. Such control occurs in cyber-physical systems (CPSs), in which software agents maintai ...

The flexibility of distributed energy resources (DERs) accommodated in active distribution networks (ADNs) can be aggregated and then used to provide ancillary services to the transmission system. In this context, this paper presents a linear optimization ...

In this paper, we propose a re-dispatch scheme for radial distribution grids hosting stochastic Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) and controllable batteries. At each re-dispatch round, the proposed scheme computes a new dispatch plan that modifies and ex ...

Only 42 % of the mean annual production of large hydropower plants in the Swiss Alps is stored in their reservoirs. Once the reservoirs are full at the end of the summer semester, plants are operated as run-on-the-river in order to avoid spilling. A signif ...

The current climate change is calling for a drastic reduction of energy demand as well as of greenhouse gases. Besides this, cities also need to adapt to face the challenges related to climate change. Cities, with their complex urban texture and fabric, ca ...

In densely populated countries, little free land is available for the deployment of photovoltaics (PV) in field installations. In addition, 40% of the world's demand for electricity is related to buildings. These facts provide a strong argument for the acc ...
