In 1948, Claude Shannon laid the foundations of information theory, which grew out of a study to find the ultimate limits of source compression, and of reliable communication. Since then, information theory has proved itself not only as a quest to find the ...

The use of point clouds as an imaging modality has been rapidly growing, motivating research on compression methods to enable efficient transmission and storage for many applications. While compression standards relying on conven- tional techniques such as ...

Video streaming from remotely controlled moving platforms such as drones have stringent constraints in terms of delay. In some applications such videos have to provide real-time visual feedback to the pilot with an acceptable distortion while satisfying hi ...

In this paper, we propose a new graph-based coding framework and illustrate its application to image compression. Our approach relies on the careful design of a graph that optimizes the overall rate-distortion performance through an effective graph-based t ...

The intrinsic high entropy metadata, known as quality scores, are largely the cause of the substantial size of sequence data files. Yet, there is no consensus on a viable reduction of the resolution of the quality score scale, arguably because of collatera ...

Contraction twinning in magnesium alloys leads to new grains that are misoriented from the parent grain by a rotation (56°, a). The classical shear theory of deformation twinning does not specify the atomic displacements and does not explain why contractio ...

The Bjontegaard model is widely used to calculate the compression efficiency between different codecs. However, this model is not sufficient to investigate the impact on quality of the interaction of the base and enhancement layer bit rates when comparing ...

In this paper, the ‘Approximate Message Passing’ (AMP) algorithm, initially developed for compressed sensing of signals under i.i.d. Gaussian measurement matrices, has been extended to a multi-terminal setting (MAMP algorithm). It has been shown that simil ...

A comprehensive overview is presented about optical fiber-based tunable photonic delay lines, which have been steadily developed over the last decade for the realization of all-optically controlled timing functions. The most widely used techniques, such as ...

In multi-view applications, multiple cameras acquire the same scene from different perspectives, which results in correlated video streams. It becomes important to exploit this correlation at the acquisition side (i.e., in the source coding) or at the rece ...

This thesis describes a novel digital background calibration scheme for pipelined ADCs with nonlinear interstage gain. Errors caused by the nonlinear gains are corrected in real-time by adaptively post-processing the digital stage outputs. The goal of this ...

A model called the linear transform network (LTN) is proposed to analyze the compression and estimation of correlated signals transmitted over directed acyclic graphs (DAGs). An LTN is a DAG network with multiple source and receiver nodes. Source nodes tra ...

This paper proposes a framework for stereo image coding with effective representation of geometry in 3D scenes. We propose a joint sparse approximation framework for pairs of perspective images that are represented as linear expansions of atoms selected fr ...

In this paper, we propose a new Distributed Video Coding (DVC) architecture where motion estimation is performed both at the encoder and decoder, effectively combining global and local motion models. We show that the proposed approach improves significantl ...

This paper addresses the problem of distortion modeling for video transmission over burst-loss channels characterized by a finite state Markov chain. Based on a detailed analysis of the error propagation and the bursty losses, a Distortion Trellis model is ...

We consider multiple description (MD) coding for the Gaussian source with K descriptions under the symmetric mean-squared error (MSE) distortion constraints, and provide an approximate characterization of the rate region. We show that the rate region can b ...

In this paper we find properties that are shared between two seemingly unrelated lossy source coding setups with side-information. The first setup is when the source and side-information are jointly Gaussian and the distortion measure is quadratic. The sec ...

In this paper, the liner concept is an electroacoustic transducer which acoustic impedance can be changed by electrical means, be it passive or active. Among the different ways to obtain variable acoustic properties on an electroacoustic transducer's voici ...
