Experimental results show that hosing of a long particle bunch in plasma can be induced by wakefields driven by a short, misaligned preceding bunch. Hosing develops in the plane of misalignment, selfmodulation in the perpendicular plane, at frequencies clo ...

Dynamic aperture is an important concept for the study of non-linear beam dynamics in circular accelerators. It describes the extent of the phase-space region where a particle's motion remains bounded over a given number of turns. Understanding the feature ...

This thesis delves into the critical study of particle transport in matter, particularly emphasising its implications for machine protection at CERN's accelerator complex and facilities. To conduct studies of this nature, FLUKA and Geant4 stand out within ...

Self-modulation is a beam-plasma instability that is useful to drive large-amplitude wakefields with bunches much longer than the plasma skin depth. We present experimental results showing that, when increasing the ratio between the initial transverse size ...

Stable and uniform beams with low divergence are required in particle accelerators; therefore, beyond the accelerated current, measuring the beam current spatial uniformity and stability over time is necessary to assess the beam performance, since these pa ...

Controlling and shaping radiation beams is fundamental for a better understanding of radiation-matter interaction and advancing experimental techniques for material characterization at high spatial resolution. In particular, the current trend in the miniat ...

This manuscript describes the design work and the R&D activities carried out for the third-generation neutron production target in the neutron Time-Of-Flight (n_TOF) facility at the European Laboratory for Particle Physics (CERN). The facility is composed ...

Hadron therapy refers to a medical treatment that uses hadron beams (i.e. protons and ions) to deliver localized energy that suppresses cancerous cells, sparing the neighbouring healthy tissues from unwanted radiation. The major technical components of a h ...

Landau damping of coherent modes is strongly dependent on the exact shape of the particle bunches. One often assumes that the transverse distributions in high-energy hadron colliders can be approximated by Gaussian distributions, in acceptable agreement wi ...

CERN is the European Organization for Nuclear Research located in Geneva, Switzerland. Its main goal is to explore fundamental physics and it exists primarily to provide physicists the necessary tools for doing this, namely accelerators. These tools bring ...

We study experimentally the longitudinal and transverse wakefields driven by a highly relativistic proton bunch during self-modulation in plasma. We show that the wakefields' growth and amplitude increase with increasing seed amplitude as well as with the ...

We measure the effects of transverse wakefields driven by a relativistic proton bunch in plasma with densities of 2.1 x 10(14) and 7.7 x 10(14) electrons/cm(3). We show that these wakefields periodically defocus the proton bunch itself, consistently with t ...

Transverse collective instabilities induced by the beam-coupling impedance of the accelerator structure lead to beam quality degradation and pose a major limitation to the machine performance. Landau damping, a powerful stabilising mechanism that can be em ...

The beam-gas vertex (BGV) detector is an innovative instrument measuring noninvasively the transverse beam size in the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) using reconstructed tracks from beam-gas interactions. The BGV detector was installed in 2016 as part of the ...

1,3,2-Diazaphospholenes (DAPs) are an emerging class of organic hydrides. In this work, we exploited them as efficient catalysts for very mild reductive Claisen rearrangements. The method is tolerant towards a wide variety of functional groups and operates ...

The Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) at CERN is the injector of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Multi-bunch instabilities limit the intensity of the beam that can be accelerated to 450 GeV in the SPS and transferred to the LHC. Without mitigation measures, ...

The generation of low-emittance electron beams has received significant interest in recent years. Driven by the requirements of X-ray-free electron lasers, the emittance of photocathode injectors has been reduced significantly, with corresponding increase ...

Hadron beams - approximately 200 MeV protons and 400 MeV/u fully stripped carbon ions - are better suited to treat deep-seated tumours than X ray beams - produced by electrons accelerated by linear accelerators (linacs) to 5-25 MeV - because they leave the ...

Proposed for the first time almost 30 years ago, the research on radio frequency linacs for hadron therapy experienced a sparkling interest in the past decade. The different projects found a common ground on a relatively high rf operating frequency of 3 GH ...

Thienoacenes and furoacenes are among the most frequent molecular units found in organic materials. The efficient synthesis of morphologically different heteroacenes and the rapid determination of their solid-state and electronic properties are still chall ...
