Blindness remains one of the most impairing disabilities worldwide, profoundly affecting independence, social participation, and quality of life. While assistive technologies offer partial support, they do not restore visual function. Retinal prostheses re ...

Objective. A key challenge of virtual reality (VR) applications is to maintain a reliable human-avatar mapping. Users may lose the sense of controlling (sense of agency), owning (sense of body ownership), or being located (sense of self-location) inside th ...

In the field of aeronautical engineering, understanding and simulating aircraft engine performance is critical, especially for improving operational safety, efficiency, and sustainability. At Safran Aircraft Engines, we were able to demonstrate the effecti ...

Hand neuroprostheses restore voluntary movement in people with paralysis through neuromodulation protocols. There are a variety of strategies to control hand neuroprostheses, which can be based on residual body movements or brain activity. There is no univ ...

The rise of robotic body augmentation brings forth new developments that will transform robotics, human-machine interaction, and wearable electronics. Extra robotic limbs, although building upon restorative technologies, bring their own set of challenges i ...

3D displays are becoming available to mainstream consumers, offering the ability to view and interact with 3D content without wearing AR/VR glasses. This paper reports the findings of a user study that compares the performance of a range of different input ...

BackgroundUnilateral spatial neglect (USN) is a debilitating neuropsychological syndrome that often follows brain injury, in particular a stroke affecting the right hemisphere. In current clinical practice, the assessment of neglect is based on old-fashion ...

Does gravity affect decision-making? This question comes into sharp focus as plans for interplanetary human space missions solidify. In the framework of Bayesian brain theories, gravity encapsulates a strong prior, anchoring agents to a reference frame via ...

The recollection of sensory information and subjective experience related to a personal past event depends on our episodic memory (EM). At the neural level, EM retrieval is linked with the reinstatement of hippocampal activity thought to recollect the sens ...

The ability to mechanically stimulate touch receptors over the entire body is a key feature for fully immersive and highly realistic virtual reality experience. Haptic stickers, flexible arrays of HAXELs (hydraulically amplified TAXels), that enable cutane ...

Most human navigation studies in MRI rely on virtual navigation. However, the necessary supine position in MRI makes it fundamentally different from daily ecological navigation. Nonetheless, until now, no study has assessed whether differences in physical ...

Recent advances in virtual reality and robotic technologies have allowed researchers to explore the mechanisms underlying bodily aspects of self-consciousness which are largely attributed to the multisensory and sensorimotor processing of bodily signals (b ...

Objective: Cognitive workload monitoring (CWM) can enhance human-machine interaction by supporting task execution assistance considering the operator’s cognitive state. Therefore, we propose a machine learning design methodology and a data processing strat ...

Surgical treatment of tumors, epileptic foci or of vascular origin, requires a detailed individual pre-surgical workup and intra-operative surveillance of brain functions to minimize the risk of post-surgical neurological deficits and decline of quality of ...

New materialism considers that the world and its histories are produced by a range of material forces that extend from the physical and the biological to the psychological, social and cultural. In recognizing that heritage is not held in objects alone, new ...

Professionals involved in building construction and monitoring increasingly implement new practices made available by Building Information Modelling (BIM), Virtual Reality (VR) and the Internet of Things (IoT). In spite of numerous efforts, most methods in ...

The present disclosure relates to a device including electrostatic brakes providing haptic kinaesthetic feedback to a user in e.g. assistive, rehabilitation or virtual reality scenarios, as well as tele-manipulation. ...

Decoding visual cognition from non-invasive measurements of brain activity has shown valuable applications. Vision-based Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCI) systems extend from spellers to database search and spatial navigation. Despite the high performance of ...

Developing an augmented reality (AR) system involves a multitude of interconnected algorithms such as image fusion, camera synchronization and calibration, and brightness control, each having diverse parameters. This abundance of features, while beneficial ...
