Free-electron beams are versatile probes of microscopic structure and composition(1,2), and have revolutionized atomic-scale imaging in several fields, from solid-state physics to structural biology(3). Over the past decade, the manipulation and interactio ...

Edward E. Hagenlocker and William G. Rado demonstrated Brillouin interaction in gas for the first time in 1965, right after the very first demonstrations of stimulated Brillouin scattering in solid materials. In their experiment, they used a megawatt pulse ...

Lanthanides (Ln) usually occur in the +3, or more recently the +2, oxidation states. The only example of an isolated molecular Ln(4+) so far remains Ce4+. Here we show that the +4 oxidation state is also accessible in a molecular compound of terbium as dem ...

Cellular checkerboard patterns are observed at many stages of embryonic development. We study an analytically tractable model for lateral inhibition and show that the steady states are analogous to optical phonons at the Gamma point, which have the wave nu ...

Recent advances in material science and digital fabrication provide promising opportunities for product design, mechanical and biomedical engineering, robotics, architecture, art, and science. Engineered materials and personalized fabrication are revolutio ...

We conduct a detailed investigation of defects in two representative amorphous oxides: amorphous Al2O3 (am-Al2O3) and TiO2 (am-TiO2), by combining ab initio molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and hybrid functional calculations. Our results indicate that o ...

Exploiting additional degrees of freedom in solid-state materials may be the most-promising solution when approaching the quantum limit of Moore's law for the conventional electronic industry. Recently discovered topologically nontrivial spin textures, sky ...

The development of ultrafast time-resolved techniques in the last decades allowed the direct observation of out-of-equilibrium transient states and dynamical processes up to then hidden in many different fields, ranging from chemistry to solid state physic ...

The present work deals with the defect chemistry and charge transport properties in halide perovskites, and in particular in the archetypal methylammonium lead iodide. These materials are extensively researched due to their very promising application as li ...

From recent advances in solid state physics, a novel material classification scheme has evolved which is based on the concept of topology and provides an understanding of different phenomena ranging from quantum transport to unusual flavors of superconduct ...

Cyanine dyes are organic semiconductor compounds with light absorption and emission properties useful for emerging technologies such as solar cells and light-emitting devices. The characteristics of these materials in the solid state depend on their organi ...
