Billions of people now have conversations daily over the Internet. A large portion of this communication takes place via secure messaging protocols that offer "end-to-end encryption'" guarantees and resilience to compromise like the widely-used Double Ratc ...

The scale and pervasiveness of the Internet make it a pillar of planetary communication, industry and economy, as well as a fundamental medium for public discourse and democratic engagement. In stark contrast with the Internet's decentralized infrastructur ...

This paper presents a novel distributed approach for solving AC power flow (PF) problems. The optimization problem is reformulated into a distributed form using a communication structure corresponding to a hypergraph, by which complex relationships between ...

Distributed systems designers typically strive to improve performance and preserve availability despite failures or attacks; but, when strong consistency is also needed, they encounter fundamental limitations. The bottleneck is in replica coordination, whi ...

In the domains of machine learning, data science and signal processing, graph or network data, is becoming increasingly popular. It represents a large portion of the data in computer, transportation systems, energy networks, social, biological, and other s ...

When humans interact with each other, eye gaze movements have to support motor control as well as communication. On the one hand, we need to fixate the task goal to retrieve visual information required for safe and precise action-execution. On the other ha ...

Aerial robot swarms can have a large socio-economic impact. They can perform time-critical missions faster than a single robot and access dangerous environments without compromising human safety. However, swarm deployment is often limited to free environme ...

The booming popularity of online services has led to a major evolution in the way these services are built and deployed. To cope with such online data-intensive services, service providers deploy several massive-scale datacenters, also referred to as wareh ...

We consider the problem of making apps fault-tolerant through replication, when apps operate at the microsecond scale, as in finance, embedded computing, and microservices apps. These apps need a replication scheme that also operates at the microsecond sca ...

In distributed optimization and machine learning, multiple nodes coordinate to solve large problems. To do this, the nodes need to compress important algorithm information to bits so that it can be communicated over a digital channel. The communication tim ...

This study proposes a novel imitation learning approach for the stochastic generation of human-like rhythmic wave gestures and their modulation for effective non-verbal communication through a probabilistic formulation using joint angle data from human dem ...

Non-verbal behaviours play an important role in human communication since it can indicate human attention, serve as communication cue in interactions, or even reveal higher level personal constructs. For instance, head nod, a common non-verbal behaviour, c ...

Coding techniques have been well studied and used for improving communication quality by combating noise and mitigating interference. Recently, it has been shown that the same coding techniques can also be exploited to further improve communication perform ...

This paper considers optimization problems over networks where agents have individual objectives to meet, or individual parameter vectors to estimate, subject to subspace constraints that require the objectives across the network to lie in low-dimensional ...

Task-based functional magnetic resonance imaging bears great potential to understand how our brain reacts to various types of stimulation; however, this is often achieved without considering the dynamic facet of functional processing, and analytical output ...

Digital capacity building is a key policy for states to meet the Sustainable Development Goals. This paper(1) presents one of the actions carried out by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) in collaboration with the Swiss Federal ...

Problems of pattern formation have been extensively studied in distributed computing. One of this problems is the gathering problem: agents must gather at a same position in a distributed manner. When gathering is not possible, a close problem is the conve ...

Modern asynchronous runtime systems allow the re-thinking of large-scale scientific applications. With the example of a simulator of morphologically detailed neural networks, we show how detaching from the commonly used bulk-synchronous parallel (BSP) exec ...

This paper presents a strategy for providing reliable state estimates that allow a group of robots to realize a formation even when communication fails and the tracking data alone is insufficient for maintaining a stable formation. Furthermore, the trackin ...

Distributed graph signal processing algorithms require the network nodes to communicate by exchanging messages in order to achieve a common objective. These messages have a finite precision in realistic networks, which may necessitate to implement message ...
