Metasurfaces provide an ideal platform for optical sensing because they produce strong light-field confinement and enhancement over extended regions that allow us to identify deep-subwavelength layers of organic and inorganic molecules. However, the requir ...

Linear electromagnetic motors (LEMs) have been proposed, developed and used to propel high-speed (i.e. speed > 100 m/s) levitating vehicles. However, few real implementations have demonstrated the feasibility of these machines at such speeds. Furthermore, ...

With the prevalence of smartphones, watches, and Internet of Things (IoT) devices, the ability to track their positions is becoming increasingly important. For many indoor positioning systems (IPSs), providing an uninterrupted flow of information in real-t ...

Monolithic pixel sensors integrate the sensor matrix and readout in the same silicon die, and therefore present several advantages over the more largely used hybrid detectors in high-energy physics. They offer an easier detector assembly, lower cost, lower ...

With the increase in penetration of power electronic converters in the power systems, a demand for overcurrent/ overloading capability has risen for the fault clearance duration. This article gives an overview of the limiting factors and the recent technol ...

The development of new industrial applications has diverted the focus of research towards compacter and faster rotatory drives. These requirements push the classical ball-bearings of electric motors to the limits in terms of operational lifetime and fricti ...

The emerging fields of silicon (Si) photonic micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS) and optomechanics enable a wide range of novel high-performance photonic devices with ultra-low power consumption, such as integrated optical MEMS phase shifters, tunable c ...

Despite their high sensitivity and their suitability for miniaturization, biosensors are still limited for clinical applications due to the lack of reproducibility and specificity of their detection performance. The design and preparation of sensing surfac ...

We develop a reduced model for hard-magnetic, thin, linear-elastic shells that can be actuated through an external magnetic field, with geometrically exact strain measures. Assuming a reduced kinematics based on the Kirchhoff-Love assumption, we derive a r ...

Magnetically-levitated drives are compelling in applications where the long-lifetime operation or process chamber encapsulation is a requirement. To exploit these advantages, contactless position sensors are needed to estimate the position of the rotor. Of ...

This paper proposes a novel full passive magnetic levitation motor without active magnetic suspension. It has a magnetic levitation unit and a motor unit. The Halbach array permanent magnets and a pyrolytic graphite (PG) disk realize the full passive magne ...

The development of new space missions with novel high-performance and very sensitive payloads for Earth observation or scientific missions has imposed considerably tougher requirements in terms of the satellite's pointing accuracy and stability, and thus o ...

This article describes the design and the characterization of the ANTIGONE (ANalog To dIGital cONvErter) ASIC (Application Specific Integrated Circuit) built in AMS 0.35 m technology for low dc-current sensing. This energy-efficient ASIC was specifically d ...

Magnetorheological (MR) valves have been included in many innovative engineering systems, such as dampers, clutches, or brakes, with different fields of application. Their role serves actuation purposes, while integrated displacement and velocity sensing i ...

Ion-sensitive field-effect transistors (ISFETs) form a high sensitivity and scalable class of sensors, compatible with advanced complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) processes. Despite many previous demonstrations about their merits as low-power i ...

The ability to control and manipulate light is a fundamental aspect that is at the very core of the development of integrated photonic circuits. It is desirable to achieve such control down to a scale that is comparable to or smaller than the wavelength of ...

The estimation of rotor position is fundamental for the commissioning of magnetically-levitated drives. The sensors required for this measurement must be close to the rotor, often requiring constructive measures that may limit the application potential of ...

A through-glass via (TGV) provides a vertical electrical connection through a glass substrate. TGVs are used in advanced packaging solutions, such as glass interposers and wafer-level packaging of microelectromechanical systems (MEMS). However, TGVs are ch ...

We present SPICE simulations of a CMOS APS pixel element consisting of the optical sensor with the sensing circuit. The photodiode is simulated at the physics level by means of the so-called Generalized Devices, without any predefined compact model. Conver ...

In our daily lives, people or devices frequently need to learn their location for many reasons as some services depend on the absolute location or the proximity. The outcomes of positioning systems can have critical effects e.g., on military, emergency. Th ...
