In a previous paper, a new gyrokinetic quasilinear model was proposed to study turbulent momentum transport in tokamaks with up-down asymmetric plasma shaping and toroidal flow shear (Sun et al 2024 Nuclear Fusion 64 036026). In this work, we start by appl ...

To address the global loss of biodiversity in freshwater environments, understanding river habitat requirements for key species, such as brown trout (Salmo trutta L.), is crucial. The Habitat Suitability Index (HSI) aids ecologists in identifying preferred ...

Reservoir sedimentation is known to be a key issue worldwide. One operational measure to deal with sediment accumulations is flushing; however, efficiency is often lacking. The goal of this study is thus to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of flush ...

Flow of lava, avalanches, mudslides, and many geophysical and planetary flow systems are examples of free-surface flows of Yield Stress Fluids (YSFs). This category of fluids is known for its dual behavior below- and above a yielding threshold for the appl ...

This toolkit has everything you need to perform imaging with a lensless camera. We make use of a low-cost implementation of DiffuserCam, namely replacing the lens with a piece of tape and using the Raspberry Pi HQ camera sensor. Similar principles and meth ...

Water diversions from rivers and torrents for anthropic uses of the resource alter the natural flow regime. As a measure, environmental flows have been prescribed and often are enforced by law to follow policies (e.g., minimal flow, proportional redistribu ...

This study presents a novel framework for evaluating the luminance measurement capabilities of High Dynamic Range (HDR) sensor cameras in indoor glare conditions. Results indicate that the practical usage range of the CSEM VIP camera is significantly lower ...

The SALUTE project aims at evaluating performance of electroacoustic metasurface, employing a surface array of controlled electroacoustic actuators, for smart acoustic lining under grazing turbulent flow to be used in UHBR Technologies Engines. Theoretical ...

In recent years, new emerging immersive imaging modalities, e.g. light fields, have been receiving growing attention, becoming increasingly widespread over the years. Light fields are often captured through multi-camera arrays or plenoptic cameras, with th ...

Steep streams involve shallow, supercritical turbulent flows over a permeable bed made up of coarse particles. They usually exhibit higher flow resistance and stronger mass and momentum exchanges between the stream and subsurface flow than low-gradient str ...

In this thesis, we propose model order reduction techniques for high-dimensional PDEs that preserve structures of the original problems and develop a closure modeling framework leveraging the Mori-Zwanzig formalism and recurrent neural networks. Since high ...

The impact of the parallel flow shear on the tokamak plasma stability and turbulent transport driven by the ion temperature gradient (ITG) modes is analyzed by means of local gyrokinetic numerical analyses. It is shown that the parallel flow shear increase ...

In the framework of the new feed-in-tariff system in Switzerland for Small Hydropower Plants (SHP), the aim of the SmallFLEX project, led by HES-SO Valais and performed in collaboration with EPFL, WSL, EAWAG, PVE, and FMV, is to show how SHP can provide wi ...

Active nematic fluids confined in narrow channels are known to generate spontaneous flows when the activity is sufficiently intense. Recently, it was demonstrated [R. Green, J. Toner, and V. Vitelli, Phys. Rev. Fluids 2, 104201 (2017)] that if the molecula ...

A burst image sensor named Hanabi, meaning fireworks in Japanese, includes a branching CCD and multiple CMOS readout circuits. The sensor is backside-illuminated with a light/charge guide pipe to minimize the temporal resolution by suppressing the horizont ...

The computational load associated with computer vision is often prohibitive, and limits the capacity for on-board image analysis in compact mobile robots. Replicating the kind of feature detection and neural processing that animals excel at remains a chall ...

Perceiving humans in the context of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) often relies on multiple cameras or expensive LiDAR sensors. In this work, we present a new cost-effective vision-based method that perceives humans' locations in 3D and their bod ...

LiftPose3D infers three-dimensional poses from two-dimensional data or from limited three-dimensional data. The approach is illustrated for videos of behaving Drosophila, mice, rats and macaques. ...

Numerical investigation of the unsteady flow patterns around the bucket can be helpful to improve the Pelton turbine efficiency. In fact, by studying the loss mechanisms in the flow, one can optimize the bucket design. For this purpose, an accurate investi ...

The numerical investigation of the unsteady flow patterns around a Pelton bucket can be helpful to improve the overall turbine efficiency by optimizing the bucket design based on identified loss mechanisms. Since the flow is highly turbulent, modeling the ...
