This book has been designed for instructors in higher education or adult training who wish to develop a new course or revise an existing one. It adopts a practical, visual, and modular approach based on the principle of constructive alignment. At its heart ...

Two design studios were successively taught in two schools of architecture: one at the Harvard Graduate School of Design (GSD) and the other at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL) in Lausanne, Switzerland, based on "A Global Morato ...

In the context of smart cities, ensuring road safety is crucial due to increasing urbanization and the interconnected nature of contemporary urban environments. Leveraging innovative technologies is essential to mitigate risks and create safer communities. ...

This paper presents the cooling concept for a medium voltage modular multilevel converter cell. To optimize power density, the metallic enclosure is used to dissipate the heat generated by semiconductor losses, while maintaining maximum temperatures below ...

Exploring a wide range of design options is crucial for every sound conceptual design process. In the conventional structural design workflow, optimization techniques are generally employed to generate well-performing design options. However, focusing only ...

At COSADE'2020, Carre et al. established a novel biascancelling property of the AES MixColumns matrix that effectively corrects any skewed output distribution of a state byte due to a faulty substitution box. Consequently, any effected byte is rendered uni ...

Introduction Most evidence on associations between alcohol use behaviors and the characteristics of its social and physical context is based on self-reports from study participants and, thus, only account for their subjective impressions of the situation. ...

Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is characterized by impairments in decision-making that can exist as stable traits or transient states. Cognitive inflexibility reflects an inability to update information that guides decision-making and is thought to contribute ...

Weight loss is key to controlling the increasing prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MS) and its components, i.e., central obesity, hypertension, prediabetes and dyslipidaemia. The goals of our study were two-fold. First, we characterised the relationships b ...

Diversity-aware platform design is a paradigm that responds to the ethical challenges of existing social media platforms. Available platforms have been criticized for minimizing users' autonomy, marginalizing minorities, and exploiting users' data for prof ...

With the increasing rate of urbanization, understanding food and beverage consumption, including alcohol drinking behaviour with its consequences, is relevant in such a megacity in the future. Especially, investigation of alcohol drinking is necessary for ...

Background: Many addictive behaviours are influenced by the context in which they occur, but methods for simultaneously capturing the characteristics of a behaviour and its context are scarce. This study describes a smartphone application developed to docu ...

This paper explores home as a space of youth nightlife and drinking through a feminist lens. It draws on feminist geographical scholarship on home and 40 semi-structured interviews with young people aged 16–25 in Switzerland in the context of a larger inte ...

Heavy alcohol consumption can lead to many severe consequences. In this paper, we study the phenomenon of heavy drinking at night (4+ drinks for women or 5+ for men on a single evening), using a smartphone sensing dataset depicting about nightlife and drin ...

The use of smartphone sensing for public health studies is appealing to understand routines. We present an approach to learn nightlife routines in a smartphone sensing dataset volunteered by 184 young people (1586 weekend nights with location data captured ...

Herringbone-grooved journal bearings (HGJBs) for high-speed turbo-machinery are often supported on O-rings due to their favorable stiffness and damping characteristics for stability and alignment reasons. They yield limited lifetime at high temperatures, i ...

Existing connectivity-oriented performance measures rank road delineation algorithms inconsistently, which makes it difficult to decide which one is best for a given application. We show that these inconsistencies stem from design flaws that make the metri ...

This paper reports on experimental testing that was carried out on a prototype adaptive structure designed to counteract the effect of loading through controlled large shape changes. The prototype is 6.6 m truss equipped with 12 linear actuators which has ...

In Mott polarimeters, the measurement of the spin polarization of an electron beam along two perpendicular quantization axes is commonly performed by collecting scattered electrons with four independent detectors placed azimuthally at 90 degrees from each ...

Background The amount of alcohol consumed during an occasion can be influenced by physical and social attributes of the setting, characteristics and state of individuals, and the interactions of these components. This systematic review identifies and descr ...
