Hydropower tailrace channels are unique and attractive locations for hydrokinetic energy harvesting due to fast currents, scheduled flow releases, proximity to existing structural and electrical infrastructures, and low risk of additional environmental imp ...

The wind turbine array consists of eight NREL 5-MW reference turbines aligned with the inflow direction. The first turbine in the array is subjected to sinusoidal yaw control with a magnitude of 10∘ and different yaw frequencies. Based on spectral and dyna ...

Nowadays, the importance of providing frequency stability to power systems with hydropower units is significantly increasing due to the growing proportion of volatile renewable energy sources. However, the provision of such services, as frequency containme ...

Francis turbines operating at off-design conditions experience the development of unfavourable cavitation flows in the draft tube at the runner outlet, which induce pressure pulsations and hydro-acoustic resonances in the worst cases. The assessment of hyd ...

In 2050, the European commission plans to achieve actual energetic transition, which contributes in meeting the climate change challenges by moving away from the fossil fuels and by developing a competitive low-carbon economy. As a consequence, a foreseeab ...

In this study, large-eddy simulations are performed to investigate the flow inside and around large finite-size wind farms in conventionally-neutral atmospheric boundary layers. Special emphasis is placed on characterizing the different farm-induced flow r ...

In a hydraulic power plant, it is essential to provide a reliable, sustainable and flexible energy supply. In recent years, in order to cover the variations of the renewable electricity production, hydraulic power plants are demanded to operate with more e ...

The integration of wind power in power systems results in a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. Thus, it has a positive environmental impact. However, the operation of these power systems becomes increasingly complex, owing mainly to random behaviour of ...

Nickel base superalloys are used for the manufacturing of monocrystalline turbine blades, due to their outstanding mechanical properties at high temperature. The mechanical properties strongly depend on the presence of γ’ precipitates in the γ matrix. Impr ...

Hydraulic pump-turbines are subject to a high periodic excitation due to the Rotor-Stator Interaction, RSI. Basically, the RSI is caused by the impeller blade passage in the wake of the guide vanes in generating mode, or upstream from the guide vanes in pu ...

Real-time clearance control in turbine engines allows improving their efficiency and safety, by enabling prognostics and optimized condition-based maintenance in the turbine hot section. This paper presents a novel 24 GHz microwave sensing system for real- ...

The paper presents the modelling, simulation and analysis of the transient behaviour of a 340 MW pump-turbine in case of emergency shutdown in turbine mode with focus on possible draft tube water column separation. The model of a pumped storage power plant ...

We investigate the Rotor-Stator Interaction in a pump-turbine reduced scale model by considering fluid-structure coupling. The pressure fluctuations amplitude in the rotor-stator vaneless gap has generally been shown to increase linearly with the operating ...

Hydropower represented in 1999 19% of the world electricity production and the absolute production is expected to grow considerably during the next 30 years. Francis turbines play a major role in the hydroelectric production due to their extended range of ...

Hydraulic power is a renewable energy with a very advantageous price, and its flexibility of use coupled with its storage possibilities easily enables to meet the peak demand. Refurbishment of old hydraulic power plants is an important topical issue and th ...

The turbine components of a gas turbine need extensive cooling to withstand the high heat loads generated by the flow of the hot combustion gases. The leading edge of a turbine blade is one of the areas that faces the hottest gas flow conditions and is thu ...

The design of Pelton turbines has always been more difficult than that of reaction turbines, and their performances lower. Indeed, the Pelton turbines combine 4 types of flows: (i) confined, steady-state flow in the piping systems and injector, (ii) free w ...

This paper presents a hybrid energy storage system based on Compressed Air Energy Storage (CAES), where the extraction of energy is done within maximum efficiency conditions. As the maximum efficiency conditions impose the level of converted power, an inte ...

The aim of this paper is to apply a surface parameterization to a blade. This geometric representation should be used as a practical tool in the process of design optimization. Most parameterizations are based on blade section approaches. The parameters ar ...
