PbTiO3-based ferroelectric solid-solution ceramics have been widely used for electromechanical devices. However, it is still challenging to separate and control the contributions to the electromechanical functionalities, mainly as a function of temperature ...

The strength of the interface between iron (Fe) and individual spherical silica (SiO2) inclusions of 5 +/- 1 mu m diameter is measured by means of in-situ micro-cantilever bending tests conducted under displacement control within a scanning electron micros ...

In this study, a protocol for synthesising beta-C2S using K2SO4 as a dopant has been reported. Quantitative X-Ray diffraction was used to characterise synthesised samples. It was observed that it is possible to synthesise beta-C2S with high purity (>96 wt% ...

The thermal behavior of 3-benzoylpropionic acid (BPA) was investigated using single-crystal and synchrotron powder X-diffraction, as well as differential scanning calorimetry analysis. The study revealed the existence of two subtly distinct structures of B ...

Barocaloric (BC) materials provide cheaper and more energy efficient alternatives to traditional refrigerants. Some liquid alkanes were recently shown to exhibit a colossal BC effect, matching the entropy changes in commercial vapour-liquid refrigerants. D ...

Cation exchange offers a strong postsynthetic tool for nanoparticles that are unachievable via direct synthesis, but its velocity makes observing the onset of the reaction in the liquid state almost impossible. After successfully proving that cation exchan ...

Visualization of organelles and their interactions with other features in the native cell remains a challenge in modern biology. We have introduced cryo-scanning transmission electron tomography (CSTET), which can ac-cess 3D volumes on the scale of 1 micro ...

This work aims to study the structural, optical, and photocatalytic properties of ZrO2 nanotubes (NTs) that have been synthesized using the electrochemical anodization method. The structural and morphological characteristics of unannealed and annealed (400 ...

A microsecond time-resolved version of cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) has recently been introduced to enable observation of the fast conformational motions of proteins. The technique involves locally melting a cryo sample with a laser beam to allow the ...

Carbon nanostructures formed through physical synthesis come in a variety of sizes and shapes. With the end goal of rationalizing synthetic pathways of carbon nanostructures as a function of tunable parameters in the synthesis, we investigate how the initi ...

Recent advancements in miniature devices with higher computational capabilities and ultralow power consumption have accelerated the development of wearable sensors, actuators, and energy harvesters everywhere. The ultimate aim of such a technological revol ...

The current energy crisis demands the development of new sustainable energy sources and devices with low environmental impact, including in the field of electrochemical cells. Mass transport limitations can reduce the overall performance of the device by l ...

The present article describes novel massive materials (in the solid phase) based on TEGylated phenothiazine and chitosan that possess great capability to recover mercury ions from constituent aqueous solutions. These were produced by chitosan hydrogelation ...

Ternary-based titanium nitride (TiN) thin films have drawn attention toward rational applications due to their wear resistance, high hardness, and corrosion resistance. The influence of Mo content on the structural, tribo-logical, and mechanical properties ...

The discovery of superconductivity in doped infinite-layer nickelate thin films has brought increased attention to the behavior of the doped perovskite phase. Despite this interest, the majority of existing studies pertain to hole-doped perovskite rare-ear ...

Titanium has become in recent years an interesting material in many applications that require a combination of high mechanical properties and low density. It has the peculiarity of undergoing an allotropic transformation at 882°C. Below this temperature, ...

To obtain a more complete understanding of material microstructure at the nanoscale and to gain profound insights into their properties, there is a growing need for more efficient and precise methods that can streamline the process of 3D imaging using a tr ...

Observing the fast dynamics of nanoscale systems is crucial in order to understand and ultimately control their behavior. Characterizing these dynamic processes requires techniques with atomic spatial resolution and a temporal resolution that matches the t ...

Time-resolved electron microscopy has made significant progress in recent years, with some groups now working on instruments that offer attosecond temporal resolution. While much of the research in the field revolves around the improvement of temporal reso ...

In the quest for controlling materials' properties, light as an external stimulus has a special place as it can create new states of matter and enable their ultrafast manipulation. In particular, spintronics, an exciting emergent field relying on the elect ...
