This paper presents the results of an experimental campaign designed specifically to investigate unexpected and unwanted failures observed during the quasi-static and fatigue tensile loading of structural adhesives. Simple finite element models were also d ...

There has been a considerable interest in developing stiff, strong, tough, and highly stretchable hydrogels in various fields of science and technology including biomedical and sensing applications. However, simultaneous optimization of stiffness, strength ...

An amorphous poly(urethane-urea) copolymer composed of 70 wt% poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) soft segments (SS) (Mw = 2000 g mol−1) and 30 wt% cycloaliphatic hard segments (HS) was subjected to in-situ X-Rays during tensile deformation. Mechanical hardening at ...

Modifying the properties of bio-based materials has garnered increasing interest in recent years. In related applications, the ability of alginates to complex with metal ions has been shown to be effective in liquid-to-gel transitions, useful in the develo ...

Pickering emulsions stabilized with a natural silicate mineral, halloysite, were dried by freeze granulation in order to prepare porous granules. Different formulations were studied, by varying the pH of the suspension, the ionic strength and with the addi ...

Due to their selective crosslinking chemistry and well-defined mechano-biochemical characteristics, hydrogels crosslinked by thiol-Michael addition reactions have garnered immense interest for 3D cell culture applications. These hydrogels are typically for ...

We present a methodology for building biologically inspired, soft microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) devices. Our strategy combines several advanced techniques including programmable colloidal self-assembly, light-harvesting with plasmonic nanotransduce ...

Protein drugs have great potential as targeted therapies, yet their application suffers from several drawbacks, such as instability, short half-life, and adverse immune responses. Thus, protein delivery approaches based on stimuli-responsive nanocarriers c ...

Nowadays, the development of cell therapy relies mainly on the advances made toward cell microencapsulation which allows to evade the need for immunosuppression during cell transplantation. Among the materials considered for cell encapsulation, hydrogels d ...

At low pH, underwater adherence between poly(N,N-dimethylacrylamide) hydrogels and poly(acrylic acid) brushes is due to the formation of multiple hydrogen bonds. The effect of the key parameters controlling the formation of these interactions (contact time ...

The production of hydrogel microspheres (MS) for cell immobilization, maintaining the favorable properties of alginate gels but presenting enhanced performance in terms of in vivo durability and physical properties, is desirable to extend the therapeutic p ...

Adhesion towards glass and interfacial healing of partially supramolecular hybrid polymer networks featuring a range of H-bdnds content were investigated through two dedicated adhesion test methods. In a first series of tests, adhesion strength was measure ...

Replacing the gel-like central part of the intervertebral disc (IVD), so-called nucleus pulposus (NP), via a minimally invasive surgery is one of the most recent approaches in the lower back pain treatments. An appropriate biomaterial for NP replacement (N ...

Poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PHEMA) and poly(poly(ethylene glycol) methacrylate) (PPEGMA) brushes represent a class of thin, surface-tethered polymer films that have been extensively used e.g. to generate non-biofouling surfaces or as model systems t ...

Aqueous drops of a well-defined size are often used as small containers for conducting chemical and biochemical reactions, cell assays and as templates to produce microparticles. To prevent their coalescence, they must be stabilized, for example, using sur ...
