There is sustained and widespread interest in understanding the limit, if there is any, to the human life span. Apart from its intrinsic and biological interest, changes in survival in old age have implications for the sustainability of social security sys ...

Decentralized algorithms for stochastic optimization and learning rely on the diffusion of information through repeated local exchanges of intermediate estimates. Such structures are particularly appealing in situations where agents may be hesitant to shar ...

Predicting where a person is looking is a complex task, requiring to understand not only the person's gaze and scene content, but also the 3D scene structure and the person's situation (are they manipulating? interacting or observing others? attentive?) to ...

Assortment planning deserves much attention from practitioners and academics due to its direct impact on retailers' commercial success. In this paper we focus on the increasingly popular retail practice to use combined product assortments with both "standa ...

Smartphones present many interesting opportunities for survey research, particularly through the use of mobile data collection applications (apps). There is still much to learn, however, about how to integrate apps in general population surveys. Recent stu ...

This article describes a partnership between architects and engineers researching in Switzerland and Brazil around innovative experiences on Textile Reinforced Concrete, which aim at the upgrade of the “argamassa armada” technology developed by brazilian a ...

Despite their impressive performance on image classification tasks, deep networks have a hard time generalizing to unforeseen corruptions of their data. To fix this vulnerability, prior works have built complex data augmentation strategies, combining multi ...

Food consumption is among the activities with the most significant environmental impacts, and furthermore contributes to rising health costs. We explored the factors that foster or hinder healthy and sustainable eating in Switzerland. Based on an online ho ...

This chapter discusses some of the opportunities offered by Big Data to understand mobility practices. However, beyond its promises, it has to be considered as human and social constructions. Therefore, the author underlines the importance of describing al ...

The ever-growing number of edge devices (e.g., smartphones) and the exploding volume of sensitive data they produce, call for distributed machine learning techniques that are privacy-preserving. Given the increasing computing capabilities of modern edge de ...
