The geometric median, an instrumental component of the secure machine learning toolbox, is known to be effective when robustly aggregating models (or gradients), gathered from potentially malicious (or strategic) users. What is less known is the extent to ...

Recent scientific and technological advancements have transformed the knowledge frontiers, giving rise to the next wave of disruptive technologies with deep impacts on urban society. An Urban Digital Twin (UDT) is a technology with great potential to trans ...

The city of Lausanne is built on fairly steep slopes, with the consequence that some buildings are leaning against what could be described as cliffs and, therefore, have only one glazed facade. The Rue Saint Martin office building has been built during the ...

Professionals involved in building construction and monitoring increasingly implement new practices made available by Building Information Modelling (BIM), Virtual Reality (VR) and the Internet of Things (IoT). In spite of numerous efforts, most methods in ...

Light induces important “Non-Image-Forming” (NIF) effects on human physiology and behavior, such as improvement of alertness, cognitive performance and mood. Considering these effects in office lighting can improve well-being and productivity of the occupa ...

Existing methods for glare-free daylighting design rely on analyses of physically based lighting simulations employing tools such as Radiance. The rendered image is an accumulation of luminance values from a fixed point of view, which creates a basis for l ...

This dissertation proposes a novel gaze-driven approach for dynamic discomfort glare assessments as a first step towards understanding human responsive comfort with respect to daylight. The objective was to observe the natural gaze behaviour in relation to ...

This study presents the results of a monitoring campaign aiming to further our understanding of occupants' behavior regarding the manual control of electric lighting in combination with shading control. It was performed on eight single-occupied offices in ...

Visual comfort is a key element at work places and at home. Besides task illuminance and color rendering it is the indoor light distribution, which strongly impacts visual comfort. We aimed to show possible relations between subjective and objective visual ...

The combined integration of daylighting and electric lighting systems within buildings --also designated by the term “Green lighting”, which is a recent issue for the lighting research community-- allows achieving better lighting conditions for building oc ...

Emergency response systems in urban areas should be located to ensure adequate coverage and rapid response time. We develop a model for locating emergency vehicles on urban networks considering both spatial and temporal demand characteristics such as the p ...

Recent studies have pointed out the general tendency of scale models to overestimate the daylighting performance of buildings, usually expressed through work plane illuminance and daylight factor distribution profiles. An analysis of the corresponding sour ...
