A combined fabric evolution (CFE) model is used to predict real-world fabric evolution of a strongly anisometric granular material under triaxial loading, connecting advances in theoretical developments and experimental measurement technology for fabric ev ...

We present results from an experimental investigation of a viscous fluid driven through and around porous disks at low and moderate Reynolds number conditions: Re = O(10(-4)-10(-3)) and Re = O(1-10). Specifically, we quantify the hydrodynamic drag that the ...

The safety of existing bridges may be assessed using data from monitoring. The fatigue damage induced during observation period is extrapolated to the total service duration of a structure, and the reserve capacity is estimated. However, due to the randomn ...

Small-scale, deformable riblets, embedded within the viscous sublayer of a turbulent boundary layer and capable to adapt to the overlying motion, are studied. The wall micro-grooves are made of a linearly elastic material and can undergo small deformations ...

Driftwood belongs to natural rivers just like water and sediment do. A sound ecosystem requires driftwood, although it might jam at civil structures, altering the flow section and rise the backwater. Safety considerations suggest removing wood from rivers, ...

Development of mechanically durable and biologically inductive hydrogels is a major challenge for load-bearing applications such as engineered cartilage. Dissipative capacity of articular cartilage is central to its functional behavior when submitted to lo ...

We propose an innovative design for an integrated, low-loss on-chip terahertz (THz) field detector based on hybrid silicon-organic slot waveguides and THz antennas. We perform a numerical study of the dependency of electro-optic interaction on geometrical ...

Transportation electrification is increasing and recently-more focus has been directed on heavy vehicles and especially on city buses. Battery electric buses are inherently more energy efficient than diesel buses and the efficiency can be further increased ...

In this work, we experimentally explore and compare FET gate stacks with and without an inner metal plane between a linear dielectric (SiO2) and a ferroelectric layer (Si-doped HfO2) operating in the negative capacitance (NC) regime. The use of nanosecond- ...

Virtual metrology (VM) involves estimating a product's quality directly from production process data without physically measuring it. This enables the product quality of each unit of production to be monitored in real time, while preserving the process eff ...

This is a COSPAR roadmap to advance the frontiers of science through innovation and international collaboration using small satellites. The world of small satellites is evolving quickly and an opportunity exists to leverage these developments to make scien ...

The ITER ECRH system consists of 24 gyrotrons with up to 24 MW installed millimeter wave heating power at 170 GHz, power supplies, control system, transmission lines, one Equatorial and the four Upper Launchers. With its high frequency and small beam focus ...
