Consider two problems about an unknown probability distribution 𝑝: (1) How many samples from 𝑝 are required to test if 𝑝 is supported on 𝑛 elements or not? Specifically, given samples from 𝑝, determine whether it is supported on at most 𝑛 elements, or it i ...

We prove sharp bounds on the enstrophy growth in viscous scalar conservation laws. The upper bound is, up to a prefactor, the enstrophy created by the steepest viscous shock admissible by the L infinity and total variation bounds and viscosity. This answer ...

Modern data center fabrics open the possibility of microsecond distributed applications, such as data stores and message queues. A challenging aspect of their development is to ensure that, besides being fast in the common case, these applications react fa ...

Online services have become ubiquitous in technological society, the global demand for which has driven enterprises to construct gigantic datacenters that run their software. Such facilities have also recently become a substrate for third-party organizatio ...

Systematic extraction of locally valid dynamic models from experiments is necessary for controller design and the validation of high fidelity models. This paper describes the extraction of a dynamic model in the form of a transfer function, giving the dyna ...

In online data-intensive (OLDI) services, each client request typically executes on multiple servers in parallel; as a result, “system hiccups”, although rare within a single server, can interfere with many client requests and cause violations of service-l ...

The booming popularity of online services has led to a major evolution in the way these services are built and deployed. To cope with such online data-intensive services, service providers deploy several massive-scale datacenters, also referred to as wareh ...

Organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs) show remarkable promise as biosensors, thanks to their high signal amplification, simple architecture, and the intrinsic flexibility of the organic material. Despite these properties, their use for real-time sens ...

Datacenters are the heart of our digital lives. Online applications, such as social-networking and e-commerce, run inside datacenters under strict Service Level Objectives for their tail latency. Tight latency SLOs are necessary for such services to remain ...

Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) have the unique ability to be configured into application-specific architectures that are well suited to specific computing problems. This enables them to achieve performances and energy efficiencies that outclass oth ...

The paper reports on a nonlinear frequency up-converting vibration energy harvester with enhanced broadband performance below 50 Hz, which is attained by leveraging vibro-impact interaction between two high-frequency piezoelectric generators and two low-fr ...

This dissertation consists of three chapters. The first chapter examines whether the availability of credit default swaps (CDS) has consequences for creditor governance. CDSs offer creditors the opportunity to hedge credit risk and may impact their willing ...

This thesis has two objectives. The first objective is to better understand the value of energy efficiency in buildings and its relationship to secondary market real estate prices. The second objective is to understand the cost of the implied insurance inc ...

Despite the high costs of acquisition and maintenance of modern data centers, machine resource utilization is often low. Servers running online interactive services are over-provisioned to support peak load (which only occurs for a fraction of the time), d ...

Improving the energy efficiency of data centers while guaranteeing Quality of Service (QoS), together with detecting performance variability of servers caused by either hardware or software failures, are two of the major challenges for efficient resource m ...

Different than the conventional queueing systems, in spatial queueing systems (SQS) the service rate for each customer-server pairs differs and the server that intervenes for a specific customer is not known a priori, depending on the availability of serve ...

In the first chapter, which is a joint work with Mathieu Cambou and Philippe H.A. Charmoy, we study the distribution of the hedging errors of a European call option for the delta and variance-minimizing strategies. Considering the setting proposed by Heston ...

This study deals with the pricing and hedging of inflation-indexed bonds. Under foreign exchange analogy we model the nominal short rate, real short rate and logarithm of the price index with an afflne Gaussian process. Using the underlying affine property ...

Distributed transactions on modern RDMA clusters promise high throughput and low latency for scale-out workloads. As such, they can be particularly beneficial to large OLTP workloads, which require both. However, achieving good performance requires tuning ...

The conventional wisdom is that aggressive networking requirements, such as high packet rates for small messages and microsecond-scale tail latency, are best addressed outside the kernel, in a user-level networking stack. We present IX, a dataplane operati ...
