We present a scanning tunneling microscope operating in a 3He cryostat at a base temperature of 0.4 K, suitable for electron spin resonance (ESR) [S. Baumann, W. Paul, T. Choi, C. P. Lutz, A. Ardavan, and A. J. Heinrich, Science 350, 417 (2015)], quantum s ...

A search for the rare eta -> mu(+)mu(-)mu(+)mu(-) double-Dalitz decay is performed using a sample of proton-proton collisions, collected by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC with high-rate muon triggers during 2017 and 2018 and corresponding to an integra ...

We analyze a measure for the degree of chaos in the magnetic fields of magnetic confinement fusion reactors by calculating the lobe fluxes of turnstiles - a method developed for characterizing transport into and out of resonance zones in Hamiltonian dynami ...

We report on the initial validation of the novel code FENNECS, which simulates the spontaneous formation of trapped electron clouds in coaxial geometries with strong externally applied azimuthal flows and in the presence of a residual neutral gas. For this ...

This PhD thesis presents a search for Heavy Neutral Leptons (HNLs) using data collected by the CMS experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC). HNLs are hypothetical new particles proposed in several theoretical extensions of the Standard Model (SM) ...

We study the evolution of magnetic fields coupled with chiral fermion asymmetry in the framework of chiral magnetohydrodynamics with zero initial total chirality. The initial magnetic field has a turbulent spectrum peaking at a certain characteristic scale ...

In plasmas composed of massless electrically charged fermions, chirality can be interchanged with magnetic helicity while preserving the total chirality through the quantum chiral anomaly. The decay of turbulent energy in plasmas such as those in the early ...

Two-level systems (TLSs) are the basic units of quantum computers but face a trade-off between operation speed and coherence due to shared coupling paths. Here, we investigate a TLS given by a singlet-triplet (ST+) transition. We identify a magnetic-field ...

We analyze the quantum antiferromagnet on the maple leaf lattice in the presence of a magnetic field. Starting from its exact dimer ground state and for a magnetic field strength of the order of the local dimer spin-exchange coupling, we perform a strong-c ...

Results are presented for a test of the compositeness of the heaviest charged lepton, τ, using data collected by the CMS experiment in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV at the CERN LHC. The data were collected in 2016–2018 and c ...

The existence of nonzero neutrino masses points to the likely existence of multiple Standard Model neutral fermions. When such states are heavy enough that they cannot be produced in oscillations, they are referred to as heavy neutral leptons (HNLs). In th ...

Two-fluid, three-dimensional, flux-driven, global, electromagnetic turbulence simulations carried out by using the GBS (Global Braginskii Solver) code are used to identify the main parameters controlling turbulent transport in the tokamak boundary and to d ...

We analyse observational signatures of magnetic fields for simulations of a Milky Way-like disc with supernova-driven interstellar turbulence and self-consistent chemical processes. In particular, we post-process two simulations data sets of the SILCC Proj ...

In relativistic magnetized plasmas, asymmetry in the number densities of left-and right-handed fermions, i.e., a nonzero chiral chemical potential mu(5), leads to an electric current along the magnetic field. This causes a chiral dynamo instability for a u ...

Water transit time is now a standard measure in catchment hydrological and ecohydrological research. The last comprehensive review of transit time modeling approaches was published 15+ years ago. But since then the field has largely expanded with new data, ...

The global linear stability of a water drop on hot nonwetting surfaces is studied. The droplet is assumed to have a static shape and the surface tension gradient is neglected. First, the nonlinear steady Boussinesq equation is solved to obtain the axisymme ...

The recent investigation of chains of Rydberg atoms has brought back the problem of commensurateincommensurate transitions into the focus of current research. In two-dimensional classical systems or in one-dimensional quantum systems, the commensurate melt ...

Understanding the turbulent dynamics in the outermost region of the tokamak is essential to predict and control the heat and particle loads to the vessel wall, a crucial problem for the entire fusion program. In this thesis, the problem is approached via t ...

As a basic and effective tool for explanation, prediction and decision making, causal relationships have been utilized in almost all disciplines. Traditionally, causal relationships are identified by making use of interventions or randomized controlled exp ...

We present a new setup for resonant inelastic hard x-ray scattering at the Bernina beamline of SwissFEL with energy, momentum, and temporal resolution. The compact R = 0.5 m Johann-type spectrometer can be equipped with up to three crystal analyzers and al ...
