We propose an interpretable model to score the subjective bias present in documents, based only on their textual content. Our model is trained on pairs of revisions of the same Wikipedia article, where one version is more biased than the other. Although pr ...

There is a bias in the inference pipeline of most diffusion models. This bias arises from a signal leak whose distribution deviates from the noise distribution, creating a discrepancy between training and inference processes. We demonstrate that this signa ...

A near collision attack against the Grain v1 stream cipher was proposed by Zhang et al. in Eurocrypt 18. The attack uses the fact that two internal states of the stream cipher with very low hamming distance between them, produce similar keystream sequences ...

Four recent trends have emerged in the evolution of authenticated encryption schemes: (1) Regarding simplicity, the adoption of public permutations as primitives allows for sparing a key schedule and the need for storing round keys; (2) using the sums of p ...

Selection bias may arise when data have been chosen in a way that subsequent analysis does not account for. Such bias can arise in climate event attribution studies that are performed rapidly after a devastating "trigger event'', whose occurrence correspon ...

The spectral decomposition of cryptography into its life-giving components yields an interlaced network of tangential and orthogonal disciplines that are nonetheless invariably grounded by the same denominator: their implementation on commodity computing p ...

In this paper, we study the security of the Key-Alternating Feistel (KAF) ciphers, a class of key alternating ciphers with the Feistel structure, where each round of the cipher is instantiated with n-bit public round permutation Pi\documentclass[12pt]{mini ...

We study socio-political systems in representative democracies. Motivated by problems that affect the proper functioning of the system, we build computational methods to answer research questions regarding the phenomena occurring in them. For each phenomen ...

Visual estimates of stimulus features are systematically biased toward the features of previously encountered stimuli. Such serial dependencies have often been linked to how the brain maintains perceptual continuity. However, serial dependence has mostly b ...

With the looming threat of large-scale quantum computers, a fair portion of recent cryptographic research has focused on examining cryptographic primitives from the perspective of a quantum adversary. Shor's 1994 result revealed that quantum computers can ...

With the pervasive digitalization of modern life, we benefit from efficient access to information and services. Yet, this digitalization poses severe privacy challenges, especially for special-needs individuals. Beyond being a fundamental human right, priv ...

We analyze the clustering of galaxies using the z = 1.006 snapshot of the CosmoDC2 simulation, a high-fidelity synthetic galaxy catalog designed to validate analysis methods for the Vera C. Rubin Observatory Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST). We prese ...

In wearable-based human activity recognition (HAR) research, one of the major challenges is the large intra-class variability problem. The collected activity signal is often, if not always, coupled with noises or bias caused by personal, environmental, or ...

We present Orthros, a 128-bit block pseudorandom function. It is designed with primary focus on latency of fully unrolled circuits. For this purpose, we adopt a parallel structure comprising two keyed permutations. The round function of each permutation is ...

It has been common knowledge that for a stream cipher to be secure against generic TMD tradeoff attacks, the size of its internal state in bits needs to be at least twice the size of the length of its secret key. In FSE 2015, Armknecht and Mikhalev however ...

Most of the cryptographic protocols that we use frequently on the internet are designed in a fashion that they are not necessarily suitable to run in constrained environments. Applications that run on limited-battery, with low computational power, or area ...

In response to the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic, public health scientists have produced a large and rapidly expanding body of literature that aims to answer critical questions, such as the proportion of the population in a geographic area that h ...

In the last few years, the field of lightweight cryptography has seen an influx in the number of block ciphers and hash functions being proposed. In the past there have been numerous papers that have looked at circuit level implementation of block ciphers ...

We present a bootstrapping procedure for the full-RNS variant of the approximate homomorphic-encryption scheme of Cheon et al., CKKS (Asiacrypt 17, SAC 18). Compared to the previously proposed procedures (Eurocrypt 18 & 19, CT-RSA 20), our bootstrapping pr ...

The goal of this tutorial is to provide the WSDM community with recent advances on the assessment and mitigation of data and algorithmic bias in recommender systems. We first introduce conceptual foundations, by presenting the state of the art and describi ...
