Janus membranes, thin permeable structures with chemical and geometrical asymmetric properties, show great potential in industrial separation processes. Yet the link between the micro- and macro-scale behaviours of these membranes needs to be established r ...

The understanding of cell-cell and cell-matrix interactions via receptor and ligand binding relies on our ability to study the very first events of their contact. Of particular interest is the interaction between a T cell receptor and its cognate peptide-m ...

Steep streams involve shallow, supercritical turbulent flows over a permeable bed made up of coarse particles. They usually exhibit higher flow resistance and stronger mass and momentum exchanges between the stream and subsurface flow than low-gradient str ...

Increasing availability of comprehensive experimental datasets and of high-performance computing resources are driving rapid growth in scale, complexity, and biological realism of computational models in neuroscience. To support construction and simulation ...

Solute accelerated cross-slip of pyramidal < c + a > screw dislocations has recently been recognized as a crucial mechanism in enhancing the ductility of solid-solution Mg alloys. In pure Mg, cross-slip is ineffective owing to the energy difference between ...

We present the results of laboratory investigations of continuously-fed density currents that propagate first over a smooth horizontal bed and then over a porous substrate of limited length. Inflow discharge, initial excess density, and substrate porositie ...

Inception and desinence thresholds of tip vortex cavitation (TVC), generated by an elliptical NACA 16-020 hydrofoil, are measured at different flow conditions for various gas contents. It is observed that TVC often disappears at cavitation indices signific ...

A simple, cheap and reproducible method to produce a C-doped TiO2 photocatalyst is presented, which can harvest visible light. This doped catalyst is able to degrade a stable organic dye molecule, Remazol Brilliant Blue (R) (RBB), under sunlight and visibl ...

Compressor surge events are unsafe operating regimes yielding highly unsteady flow fields in which complex aeroelastic phenomena occur. If the blade flutter and forced response behaviour (i.e. aeroelastic stability) can be predicted reliably for normal flo ...

In this letter we report on the fabrication and characterization of titanium dioxide (TiO2)-based resistive RAM (ReRAM) co-integration with 380 ìm-height Cu Through Silicon Via (TSV) arrays for programmable 3D interconnects. Nonvolatile resistive switching ...

Highly loaded impellers, typically used in turbocharger and gas turbine applications, exhaust an unsteady, transonic flow that is nonuniform across the span and pitch and swirling at angles approaching tangential. With the exception of the flow angle, conf ...

In this study, a double volute centrifugal pump with relative low efficiency and high vibration is redesigned to improve the efficiency and reduce the unsteady radial forces with the aid of unsteady computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis. The concept ...

The present invention concerns a color conversion film comprising at least one active layer, said layer comprising an organic fluorescent dye containing a fluorescent core, wherein said dye is substituted with at least one polymer segment. It also concerns ...

We have measured the binding coefficients of iodine to three dyes used in Dye Sensitised Solar Cells (DSSCs). Binding coefficients are quantified via the effect of iodine binding on the UV-vis spectrum of the dye. From iodine titration curves of dye sensit ...

The axial compressor is an essential component of aero-engines and gas turbines. This work investigates how flow control by aspiration applied to the hub and to the blades of axial compressor wheels can improve the static pressure rise by preventing detrim ...

Annular cascades are particularly useful to study the three dimensional phenomena encountered in turbomachines. The Non-Rotating Annular Test Facility of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL) consists in a radial-axial inlet nozzle a ...

meso-Substituted boron-dipyrromethene (BODIPY) dyes are a puzzling class of molecules, which feature contrasting emissive behaviors. The full mechanistic picture for these distinctive properties is still missing. Using static and dynamic excited state comp ...

The present invention relates to a novel method for preparing cationic azo compounds, which preferably can be used as dyes. Further, the invention relates to novel cationic azo compounds and the use of N2O in the synthesis of azo-imidazolium dyes. ...

The prediction of flutter and forced response at normal flow conditions has become a standard procedure during the design of compressor airfoils. But at severe off-design conditions, the flow field becomes very complex, especially during the surge blow-dow ...

We propose a new variational framework for the problem of reconstructing flow fields from noisy measurements. The formalism is based on regularizers penalizing the singular values of the Jacobian of the field. Specifically, we rely on the nuclear norm. Our ...
