Energy piles represent an innovative technology that can help provide sustainable geothermal heating or cooling energy for thermal conditioning purposes. In hot-dominated climates, the interest is to inject heat in the ground and extract energy for space-c ...

Induced seismicity caused by anthropogenic modification of the subsurface effective stress state has been observed in a number of industrial applications -- from hydrocarbon extraction (e.g., Groningen [1]), drilling waste-water disposal (e.g., [2]) to the ...

Hydraulic fractures are driven by an internal fluid pressure exceeding the minimum compressive stress, propagating in a direction perpendicular to the latter. This class of tensile fractures has gained interest over the last fifty years due to the developm ...

At the conceptual stage, building performance simulation (BPS) based evaluations are being increasingly used for tasks such as ranking of competing massing design proposals. However, such conceptual stage evaluations suffer from information deficiency in b ...

The presence of conversational agents (or chatbots) in educational contexts has been steadily increasing over the past few years. Recent surveys have shown widespread interest in the use of chatbots in education, both for research and practice. Although th ...

Maxwell's equations govern light propagation and its interaction with matter. Therefore, the solution of Maxwell's equations using computational electromagnetic simulations plays a critical role in understanding light-matter interaction and designing optic ...

One-of-a-kind experimental and numerical investigation is provided in this paper about energy sheet pile walls: earth retaining structures that embed heat exchanger probes within piles for the exploitation of shallow geothermal energy. The study resorts to ...

This study explores and validates a machine learning approach for the practical, effective, and precise prediction of the thermo-physical characteristics that are essential for the analysis and design of shallow geothermal systems, including borehole heat ...

Energy piles are shallow geothermal systems integrated into structures already required for structural functions of civil works that provide both geothermal energy supply and structural support to the built environments. This research work is driven by the ...

In the past 20 years, the growing interest in deep geo-reservoirs for purposes such as carbon storage, waste water disposal, or geothermal energy exploitation have led to large-volume fluid injections into the upper continental crust. These fluid injection ...

Before this study, no analytical models had been made available for describing the behaviour of plane geostructures subjected to thermal and mechanical actions. This knowledge gap notably represented a limitation for investigations about the behaviour of s ...

Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS) allow for worldwide geothermal electricity production. They target deep (3-5 km), fractured rock reservoirs whose permeability is artificially increased through hydraulic stimulations (fluid injections). The injections mod ...

This article presents the exergoeconomic evaluation of a new geothermal-based integrated system, which produces hydrogen and freshwater. The proton exchange membrane electrolyzer (PEME) and humidifier-dehumidifier (HDH) units are responsible for hydrogen a ...

The main purpose behind the use of energy piles is to enable the exploitation of geothermal energy for meeting the heating/cooling demands of buildings in an efficient and environment-friendly manner. However, the long-term performance of energy piles in d ...

Geothermometrical characterisation of low-temperature, carbonate-evaporitic geothermal systems is usually hampered by the lack of appropriate mineral equilibria to successfully use most of the classical geothermometers and/or by the thermodynamic uncertain ...

Over the past twenty years, an increasing amount of research has been performed to understand the multiphysical behaviour and to address the geotechnical and structural design of so-called energy piles, i.e. deep foundations that can serve any superstructu ...

This study presents an equivalent pier analysis of the vertical deformation and displacement of full-scale pile groups subjected to mechanical and thermal loads that are associated with a structural support and a geothermal heat exchanger operation, respec ...

This study focuses on the analysis of the energy performance and economic feasibility of so-called tunnel energy segmental linings: an innovative technology that couples the structural support role of the tunnel lining with the heating-cooling role of the ...

The focus and challenge for energy engineering in the context of rapid climate change is summarised by the Europe 20-20-20 targets, committing to a reduction in energy consumption of 20%. The most logical approach to achieve these goals is to target the mo ...

Over the past two decades, a substantial amount of research has investigated the effects of thermal loads associated with the geothermal operation of energy piles on their mechanical response. Based on this research, consensus about the need for considerin ...
