The evolution of microstructure and mechanical properties of AISI 904L stainless steel subjected to high-pressure torsion (HPT) and post-deformation annealing was investigated. A nanocrystalline microstructure with an average grain size of 48 nm was obtain ...

This study investigates various cracking mechanisms and their prevalence in fusion processing of steel-copper multi-materials using operando X-ray diffraction and imaging during laser powder-bed fusion (LPBF) of 316L-CuCrZr multi-material. During this inve ...

Agent-based simulations have been widely applied in many disciplines, by scientists and engineers alike. Scientists use agent-based simulations to tackle global problems, including alleviating poverty, reducing violence, and predicting the impact of pandem ...

Many natural and industrial processes involve fluid flow at a three phase interface between liquid, solid and gas. When the liquid is forced to move rapidly over the solid surface, the physical mechanisms governing contact line motions are multi-phase and ...

Sorption of mercury (Hg) in soils is suggested to be predominantly associated with organic matter (OM). However, there is a growing collection of research that suggests that clay minerals and oxides are also important solid phases for the sorption of solu ...

Which phenomenon slows down the dynamics in supercooled liquids and turns them into glasses is a long-standing question of condensed matter. Most popular theories posit that as the temperature decreases, many events must occur in a coordinated fashion on a ...

Precise packaging of nanoliter amounts of liquid in a microsystem is important for many biomedical applications. However, existing liquid encapsulation technologies have limitations in terms of liquid waste, evaporation, trapped bubbles, and liquid degrada ...

We study the statistical mechanics and the equilibrium dynamics of a system of classical Heisenberg spins with frustrated interactions on a d -dimensional simple hypercubic lattice, in the limit of infinite dimensionality d -> infinity . In the analysis we ...

A force-feedback surface that creates and modulates distinctive profile and stiffnessto interact with a user in contact thereto, the surface being functionally independentto be used as a single module but can be customized to extend the application indiver ...

Snowfall is an essential component of the hydrological cycle, as it is involved in most precipitation on Earth, either directly as snow falling to the ground or indirectly as rain melted from snow. At the same time, the ice phase of clouds and precipitatio ...

The nonlinear decay of oscillations of a liquid column in a U-shaped tube is investigated within the theoretical framework of the projection method formalized by Bongarzone et al. [Chaos 31, 123124 (2021)]. Starting from the full hydrodynamic system supple ...

The subject of the present work is discovery and in-depth characterization of a new class of functional materials. Tuning of the bond polarity and orbital occupation with a goal of establishing balance between localization and delocalization of electrons - ...

Finding cycles in directed graphs enables important applications in various domains such as finance, biology, chemistry, and network science. However, as the size of graph datasets continues to grow, it becomes increasingly difficult to discover cycles wit ...

An important advantage of optical signal processing is the possibility of performing various operations in parallel. Among the techniques proposed for parallel optical signal processing, frequency division multiplexing (FDM) is a well-known approach, in wh ...

In the third study, the order-disorder phase transition of single-crystal C60 is studied using time-resolved electron microscopy. Solid C60 undergoes a first-order phase transition upon heating to 260 K. This is a structural transition from the low-tempera ...

Many properties of materials, including their dissolution kinetics, hardness, and optical appearance, depend on their structure. Unfortunately, it is often difficult to control the structure of low molecular weight organic compounds that have a high propen ...

Barocaloric (BC) materials provide cheaper and more energy efficient alternatives to traditional refrigerants. Some liquid alkanes were recently shown to exhibit a colossal BC effect, matching the entropy changes in commercial vapour-liquid refrigerants. D ...

High radiation damage resistance has become increasingly important for applications of functional materials in harsh environments. The high radiation damage resistance diamond cubic carbon is a unique material which is considered for radiation environments ...

Cavitation bubbles, extensively investigated in fluid mechanics, present enduring challenges in hydraulic machinery, while holding considerable potential for practical applications in biomedicine and sonochemistry. Despite more than a century of research, ...

We model, via classical molecular dynamics simulations, the plastic phase of ice VII across a wide range of the phase diagram of interest for planetary investigations. Although structural and dynamical properties of plastic ice VII are mostly independent o ...
