Previous real-time sawtooth control scenarios using EC actuators have attempted to shorten [1] or lengthen [2] the sawtooth period by optimally positioning the EC absorption near the q=1 surface. In new experiments we demonstrate for the first time that individual sawtooth crashes can be repetitively induced at predictable times by reducing the stabilizing ECCD power after a predetermined time from the preceding crash. Other stabilizing actuators ( e. g. ICRF, NBI) are expected to produce similar effects. A

For the first time, a rigorous definition of the magnetic presheath entrance (MPSE) is provided, as the location where the drift-reduced approximation breaks down. We consider a weakly collisional electrostatic plasma with cold ions in contact with an absorbing wall in the presence of ExB drifts. We provide expressions at the MPSE for the parallel ion and electron velocities, the gradients of plasma density and potential, and the vorticity. In particular, we show that the plasma potential with respect to th

This paper presents a novel approach for visual scene representation, combining the use of quantized color and texture local invariant features (referred to here as {\em visterms}) computed over interest point regions. In particular we investigate the different ways to fuse together local information from texture and color in order to provide a better {\em visterm} representation. We develop and test our methods on the task of image classification using a 6-class natural scene database. We perform classific

This article presents a feasibility study for a motional Stark effect diagnostic on the TCV tokamak. A numerical simulation code has been used to identify the optimal port arrangement and geometrical layout. It predicts the expected measurement accuracy for a range of typical plasma scenarios. With the existing neutral particle injector and a detection system based on current day technology, it should be possible to determine the safety factor with an accuracy of the order of 5%. A vertically injected beam

The peakedness of the density profile in source-free MHD-quiescent L-mode plasmas with lower hybrid current drive is observed to decrease with decreasing peaking of the current profile. For the discharges investigated, which include normal and reversed magnetic shear plasmas, the relationship can be summarized as n(e0)/ congruent to 1.2l(i), where l(i) is the normalized internal inductance. Density profiles are monotonically peaked at negative shear. Since density profiles remain peaked at zero loop v

This paper is an overview of recent results relating to turbulent particle and heat transport, and to the triggering of internal transport barriers (ITBs). The dependence of the turbulent particle pinch velocity on plasma parameters has been clarified and compared with experiment. Magnetic shear and collisionality are found to play a central role. Analysis of heat transport has made progress along two directions: dimensionless scaling laws, which are found to agree with the prediction for electrostatic turb

The low aspect ratio of the mega amp spherical tokamak (MAST) allows differentiation between different forms of the H-mode threshold scaling. With optimized fuelling using inboard puffing, and a connected double null divertor (DND) magnetic configuration, the H-mode power threshold data lie about 1.7 times higher than recent scaling laws. Slight magnetic configuration changes, of the order of the ion Larmor radius, around a connected DND significantly influence H-mode access. H-mode confinement in discharge

There is currently both considerable interest in the physics of ELM transport in the scrape-off layer (SOL) and concern over the impact of the ELM power and particle loads on the divertor targets of future fusion reactors. This paper describes some experimental observations of the reaction of target floating potentials and currents during ELMS in TCV, relying principally on fast measurements of these parameters using tile embedded Langmuir probe arrays. Clear evidence is presented for rapid modifications in

In the frame of development of the ITER electron cyclotron wave (ECW) system, a two MW CW coaxial cavity gyrotron will be developed during the Sixth Framework Program (2003-2006). Such development relies on the availability of a test stand capable of providing the electrical energy and cooling capacity. This test stand will possibly be used, in a later stage, for the component test of the ITER ECW system. This paper will first present the main parameters of this new coaxial gyrotron. Then we describe the te

The possibility of fulfilling the condition of poloidal closure of the contours of the second adiabatic invariant for all reflected particles is studied for systems with poloidally closed contours of the magnetic field B on the magnetic surfaces through computational stellarator optimization. It is shown that by adjusting the geometry this is possible in a major fraction of the plasma volume. The most salient characteristic (as compared to previous quasi-isodynamic configurations) is a magnetic axis whose c

Fully kinetic assessments of the stability properties of toroidal drift modes have been obtained for cases for the large helical device (LHD). This calculation employs the comprehensive linear microinstability code FULL, as recently extended for nonaxisymmetric systems. The code retains the important effects in the linearized gyrokinetic equation, using the lowest-order 'ballooning representation' for high toroidal mode number instabilities in the electrostatic limit. These effects include trapped particles

The DINA free-boundary equilibrium simulation code has been implemented for TCV, including the full TCV feedback and diagnostic systems. First results showed good agreement with control coil perturbations and correctly reproduced certain non-linear features in the experimental measurements. The latest DINA code simulations, presented in this paper, exploit discharges with different cross-sectional shapes and different vertical instability growth rates which were subjected to controlled vertical displacement
