Two-level systems (TLSs) are the basic units of quantum computers but face a trade-off between operation speed and coherence due to shared coupling paths. Here, we investigate a TLS given by a singlet-triplet (ST+) transition. We identify a magnetic-field ...

Members of the Shewanella genus transfer electrons to metal and actinide electron acceptors such as hexavalent uranium, U(VI), via c-type cytochromes. The intracellular mechanism of electron transfer is well studied but the delivery of electrons to externa ...

We present a scanning tunneling microscope operating in a 3He cryostat at a base temperature of 0.4 K, suitable for electron spin resonance (ESR) [S. Baumann, W. Paul, T. Choi, C. P. Lutz, A. Ardavan, and A. J. Heinrich, Science 350, 417 (2015)], quantum s ...

Curcuminoids and their complexes continue to attract attention in medicinal chemistry, but little attention has been given to their metabolic derivatives. Here, the first examples of (arene)Ru(II) complexes with curcuminoid metabolites, tetrahydrocurcumin ...

Dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) combined with high magnetic fields and fast magic angle spinning (MAS) has opened up a new avenue for the application of exceptionally sensitive 1H NMR detection schemes to study protonated solids. Recently, it has been s ...

129Xe dissolution dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) is a controversial topic. The gold standard technique for hyperpolarized xenon magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is spin exchange optical pumping, which received FDA approval in 2022. Nevertheless, the ve ...

Noninvasive tracking of biochemical processes in the body is paramount in diagnostic medicine. Among the leading techniques is spectroscopic magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), which tracks metabolites with an amplified (hyperpolarized) magnetization signal ...

Our ability to study and valorize the lignin fraction of biomass is hampered by the fundamental and still unmet challenge of precisely quantifying native lignin's structural features. Here, we developed a rapid elevated-temperature H-1-C-13 Heteronuclear S ...

We report the development of a continuous-wave and pulsed X-band electron spin resonance (ESR) spectrometer for the study of spins on ordered surfaces down to cryogenic temperatures. The spectrometer operates in ultra-high vacuum and utilizes a half-wavele ...

We investigate the magnetic structure and magnetoelectric(ME) effect in the high -field phase of the antiferromagnet LiFePO 4 above the critical field of 31 T. A neutron diffraction study in pulsed magnetic fields reveals the propagation vector to be q = 0 ...

Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) methods are powerful tools employed in many fields, including physics, chemistry, material science, biology, and medicine. The use of NMR methodologies in an even wider range of applications is often hindered by the relativ ...

The detection of inelastically scattered soft x-rays with high energy resolution usually requires large grating spectrometers. Recently, photoelectron spectrometry for analysis of x-rays (PAX) has been rediscovered for modern spectroscopy experiments at sy ...

This thesis investigates the magnetic properties of single atoms and molecules adsorbed on thin magnesium oxide decoupling layers, grown on a silver single crystal. To address these systems experimentally, we use a low temperature scanning tunneling micros ...

The physical properties of many modern multi-component materials are determined by their internal microstructure. Tools capable of characterizing complex nanoscale architectures in composite materials are, therefore, essential to design materials with targ ...

The role of 1H solid-state NMR in structure elucidation of solids is becoming more preponderant, particularly as faster magic-angle spinning rates (MAS) become available which improve 1H detected assignment strategies. However, current 1H spectral resoluti ...

The design point that had been chosen for EU DEMO in 2016 is reviewed here and a modification is proposed with a lower aspect ratio. Previously the same aspect ratio, A, was chosen for EU DEMO as in major tokamak experiments including ITER (A = 3.1), and, ...

The resolution of proton solid-state NMR spectra is usually limited by broadening arising from dipolar interactions between spins. Magic-angle spinning alleviates this broadening by inducing coherent averaging. However, even the highest spinning rates expe ...

We report a combined polarized and unpolarized neutron diffraction study on a multiferroic Sr2CoSi2O7 (SCSO) single crystal below and above the antiferromagnetic ordering temperature TN = 6.5 K. Unpolarized neutron diffraction measurements at 15 K confirm ...

("Re" stands for the rare-earth element) and their doped derivatives have long been recognized as a family of compounds that exhibit rich phenomena in quantum magnetism, drawing wide attention to them from both fundamental researchers and industr ...

The low-energy electronic structure of nanographenes can be tuned through zero-energy pi-electron states, typically referred to as zero-modes. Customizable electronic and magnetic structures have been engineered by coupling zero-modes through exchange and ...
