This paper introduces a new method for solving the distributed AC power flow (PF) problem by further exploiting the problem formulation. We propose a new variant of the ALADIN algorithm devised specifically for this type of problem. This new variant is cha ...

The transition of the global energy sector from fossil-based towards a zero-carbon system is a necessity to mitigate the impacts of climate change. The ratification of both, the Paris agreement in 2015 and the European Green Deal in 2019, illustrates the p ...

The medium-voltage grid emulator is gaining popularity for testing grid-code compliance of large-capacity converters for renewable energy resources. The cascaded H-bridge converter based on active-front-ends is a promising candidate for high-power grid emu ...

This paper defines a Maximum Likelihood Estimator (MLE) for the admittance matrix estimation of distribution grids, utilising voltage magnitude and power measurements collected only from common, unsychronised measuring devices (Smart Meters). First, we pre ...

The latest developments in dc transformer technology are enabling larger and more complex dc power distribution systems. However, the literature is scarce regarding the investigation and quantification of its impact on the dc grid. Therefore, this paper an ...

With the increase in penetration of power electronic converters in the power systems, a demand for overcurrent/ overloading capability has risen for the fault clearance duration. This article gives an overview of the limiting factors and the recent technol ...

Dispatching active distribution networks (ADNs) is an energy-intensive application that, if implemented via battery-energy storage systems (BESSs), can require a large capacity of these assets in order to fully balance the uncertainties caused by the stoch ...

In light of the energy transition, it becomes a widespread solution to decentralize and to decarbonize energy systems. However, limited transformer capacities are a hurdle for large-scale integration of solar energy in the electricity grid. The aim of this ...

Low-carbon societies will need to store vast amounts of electricity to balance intermittent generation from wind and solar energy, for example, through frequency regulation. Here, we derive an analytical solution to the decision-making problem of storage o ...

In this paper, we present an exact (i.e. non-approximated) and linear measurement model for hybrid AC/DC micro-grids for recursive state estimation (SE). More specifically, an exact linear model of a voltage source converter (VSC) is proposed. It relies on ...

The thesis develops a planning framework for ADNs to achieve their dispatchability by means of ESS allocation while ensuring a reliable and secure operation of ADNs. Second, the framework is extended to include grid reinforcements and ESSs planning. Finall ...

Modular multilevel matrix converter is a type of converter used in medium-voltage ac-ac power conversion. Controlling the energy content of the converter arms is a prerequisite for a proper converter operation, and at the same time a challenging control ta ...

In the analysis of power grid waveforms, the presence of amplitude or phase steps can disrupt the estimation of frequency and rate-of-change-of-frequency (ROCOF). Standard methods based on phasor-models fail in the extraction of signal parameters during th ...

This work proposes a method for optimal planning (sizing and siting) energy storage systems (ESSs) in power distribution grids while considering the option of curtailing photo-voltaic (PV) generation. More specifically, for a given PV generation capacity t ...

This paper proposes a Linear Parameter-Varying loop-shaping controller for a power-synchronized grid-following inverter (PSGFLI). This control strategy regulates the inverter output active and reactive power at the terminal instead of the point of connecti ...

At the current time, the world as we know it is at a crossroads; there is an urgent need to lower greenhouse gas emissions to limit the global rise in temperature. However, this is at odds with the increasing energy demands of the world's growing populatio ...
