Stream-water temperature is a key variable controlling chemical, biological, and ecological processes in freshwater environments. Most models focus on a single river cross-section; however, temperature gradients along stretches and tributaries of a river n ...

Fusion performance in tokamaks hinges critically on the efficacy of the edge transport barrier (ETB) in suppressing energy losses. The new concept of 'fingerprints' is introduced to identify the instabilities that cause transport losses in the ETBs of many ...

Reinforced concrete flat slabs consist of a continuous, thin concrete plate that rests on a grid of columns. The supporting surface of the columns is very small compared to the floor plan dimensions, leading to concentrations of shear forces near the colum ...

Glacier retreat as a consequence of climate change influences freshwater ecosystems in manifold ways, yet the physical and chemical bases of these effects are poorly studied. Here, we characterize how water temperature differs between alpine lakes with and ...

Because of established demolition routines and low construction-material production costs that neglect negative externalities, discarded concrete today is crushed and landfilled or downcycled as infill material or recycled aggregates, wasting its embodied ...

We characterise computationally and experimentally a three-dimensional (3D) microfluidic passive mixer for various Reynolds numbers ranging from 1 to 100, corresponding to primary flow rates of 10-870 mu l min(-1). The 3D mixing channel is composed of mult ...

When producing asphalt concrete mixture with high amounts of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP), the mixing temperature plays a significant role in the resulting spatial distribution of the components as well as on the quality of the resulting mixture, in te ...

The addition of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) in hot mix asphalt is now common practice in Switzerland. With the increases of RAP content in asphalt mixture, the problematic of the mix design optimization becomes an important issue to be considered. The ...

The reduction of virgin bitumen added to asphalt mixtures containing Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP) is based on the typical assumption that all the aged binder function in the same way as the virgin binder. However, recent studies conducted by the author ...

Despite the massive use of Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP) in Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) production, the chemo-physical phenomena that characterise the fabrication of these mixtures have not yet been completely explored. The detection and understanding of thes ...

The present study defines a procedure for gaining a better understanding of the interaction between the aged and the virgin binders and what actually occurs during a mix process. Indeed, the authors propose a methodology to determine and quantify the clust ...

One challenge in efficient recycling of asphalt concrete is the adherence of the reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) particles or clustering that inhibits fulfilling the aggregate gradation requirements. In order to investigate this phenomenon two types of mi ...

Highly efficient organic solar cells typically comprise donor-acceptor blend layers facilitating effective splitting of excitons. However, the charge carrier mobility in the blends can be substantially smaller than in neat materials, hampering the device p ...

This paper presents a methodology to approximate the urban heat island effect by using a PostgreSQL database and CitySim software, a simulation tool to evaluate urban energy flows. A ground temperature model has been developed for shallow depths (until 4m) ...

The reactions of dolomite with portlandite have been studied at well-spaced temperatures between 20 degrees C and 85 degrees C using XRD Rietveld, TG and SEM methods. The results show quantitatively the faster rates of reaction at higher temperature. Isoth ...

Today, concrete is the most widely used construction material worldwide. Strong, versatile, durable, and vector of economic development, this exceptional material is also the principal cause of greenhouse-gas emissions, material depletion and waste generat ...

Nowadays, the production in fine chemical and pharmaceutical industry is mostly carried out in large scale batch reactors having typically dimensions of a few meters to satisfy the demand of the market. Even though this technology has been widely used and ...

As the most widely used construction material worldwide, concrete is the main cause of greenhouse gas emissions, material depletion, and waste generation by the construction industry. Typically, concrete waste is crushed and, at best, reclaimed into recycl ...

Nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS) offer the potential to revolutionize fundamental methods employed for signal processing in today's telecommunication systems,1-4 owing to their spectral purity and the prospect of integration with existing technology. I ...

Wave and tide are important forcing factors that typically co-exist in coastal environments. A numerical study was conducted to investigate individual and combined effects of these forces on flow and mixing processes in a near-shore subterranean estuary. A ...
