Sexual harassment is prevalent at all levels of higher education and research and in all disciplines, which means that engineering education is no exception. Following the #MeToo movement, students have started to report cases of abuses publicly in our ins ...

LoRaWAN is a low-power wireless technology that provides long-range connectivity to battery-powered Internet of Things (IoT) devices. To minimize the energy consumption of the IoT nodes, LoRaWAN networks use for the uplink a pure non-slotted ALOHA multiple ...

This work deals with a control strategy to regulate homogeneous reaction systems in reactors equipped with a cooling jacket. The reaction system is expressed in terms of vessel extents and viewed as a single-input (the inlet coolant temperature), two-outpu ...

Brain-Machine interfaces aim to create a direct neural link between user's brain and machines. This goal has pushed scientists to investigate a large spectrum of applications in the realm of assistive and rehabilitation technologies. However, despite great ...

A programmable patient-customized epileptic seizure detector is proposed in this paper to enable neurologists and patients to have constructive interactions with the implantable medical device. The programmability feature is enabled by designing a low-powe ...

We strengthen the results from a recent work by the second author, achieving bounds on the weight distribution of binary linear codes that are successful under block-MAP (as well as bit-MAP) decoding on the BEC. We conclude that a linear code that is succe ...

Over the past two decades, the thermo-hydro-mechanical behavior of earth-contact structures such as piles, walls, slabs, and tunnels, which simultaneously provide structural support and energy supply, has been studied through various field experiments and ...

Algebraic network information theory is an emerging facet of network information theory, studying the achievable rates of random code ensembles that have algebraic structure, such as random linear codes. A distinguishing feature is that linear combinations ...

Stable and uniform beams with low divergence are required in particle accelerators; therefore, beyond the accelerated current, measuring the beam current spatial uniformity and stability over time is necessary to assess the beam performance, since these pa ...

An important class of modern channel codes is the capacity-achieving sequences of low-density parity-check block codes. Such sequences are usually designed for the binary erasure channel and are decoded by iterative message-passing algorithms. In this pape ...

Stimulated by the COVID-19 outbreak, the global healthcare industry better acknowledges the necessity of innovating novel methods for remote healthcare monitoring and treating patients outside clinics. Here we report the development of two different types ...

Various embodiments are directed to Reed-Muller decoding systems and methods based on recursive projections and aggregations of cosets decoding, exploiting the self-similarity of RM codes, and extended with list-decoding procedures and with outer-code conc ...

In the last decade, DNA has been increasingly investigated as an alternative medium for cold data storage, presenting several advantages over standard hard drives such as a higher density, longer lifespan and lower energy consumption. However, such coding ...

We propose a new class of efficient decoding algorithms for Reed-Muller (RM) codes over binary-input memoryless channels. The algorithms are based on projecting the code on its cosets, recursively decoding the projected codes (which are lower-order RM code ...

Background: Although digital mobility outcomes (DMOs) can be readily calculated from real-world data collected with wearable devices and ad-hoc algorithms, technical validation is still required. The aim of this paper is to comparatively assess and validat ...

Current procedures for the rapid inspection of buildings and infrastructure are subjective, time-consuming, and cumbersome to document, necessitating new technologies to automate the process and eliminate these shortcomings. Fortunately, recent development ...

We consider discrete message passing (MP) decoding of low-density parity check (LDPC) codes based on information-optimal symmetric look-up table (LUT). A link between discrete message labels and the associated log-likelihood ratio values (defined in terms ...

Nickel iron layered double hydroxide (NiFe LDH) is one of the best oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts in alkaline electrolytes. However, it performs poorly in neutral electrolytes, and the detailed mechanism is still unclear. Herein, we introduce el ...

A reduced complexity sequential decoding algorithm for polar (sub) codes is described. The proposed approach relies on a decomposition of the polar (sub) code being decoded into a number of outer codes, and on-demand construction of codewords of these code ...

The synthesis of high-performance gas-sieving zeolitic film is challenging because it involves seeded secondary growth which is complex and difficult to reproduce. Additionally, expensive asymmetric inorganic porous supports are often needed for calcinatio ...
