Blindness remains one of the most impairing disabilities worldwide, profoundly affecting independence, social participation, and quality of life. While assistive technologies offer partial support, they do not restore visual function. Retinal prostheses re ...

Neural markers of visual function in age-related macular degeneration (AMD) allow clinicians and researchers to directly evaluate the functional changes in visual processing which occur as a result of the progressive loss of afferent input from the macula. ...

Background and Hypothesis Individuals with schizophrenia have less priors than controls, meaning they rely less upon their prior experiences to interpret the current stimuli. These differences in priors are expected to show as higher alternation rates in b ...

Alpha oscillations represent the brain's electrical activity in the frequency range of 8 to 13 Hz. They are often considered to be the rhythm of conscious perception, rhythmically modulating the processing of sensory inputs. This interpretation has been dr ...

Decoding visual cognition from non-invasive measurements of brain activity has shown valuable applications. Vision-based Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCI) systems extend from spellers to database search and spatial navigation. Despite the high performance of ...

Perception depends on reference frames. For example, the "true'' cycloidal motion trajectory of a reflector on a bike's wheel is invisible because we perceive the reflector motion relative to the bike's motion trajectory, which serves as a reference frame. ...

This study investigates the joint impact of façade geometry and associated sunlight patterns on occupant subjective perception and physiological responses through a novel experimental method coupling physically-based simulations shown in virtual reality wi ...

Is consciousness a continuous stream, or do percepts occur only at certain moments of time? This age-old question is still under debate. Both positions face difficult problems, which we proposed to overcome with a 2-stage model, where unconscious processin ...

Whereas much is known about the degenerative effects of aging on cortical tissue, less is known about how aging affects visually evoked electrical activity, and at what latencies. We compared visual processing in elderly and young controls using a visual m ...

A widely investigated question in the research on the acquisition of novel functional object representations is the role of the action system. Whereas most studies so far have investigated the role of active action training on the acquisition of object rep ...

How the brain integrates visual information across time into coherent percepts is an open question. Here, we investigated this integration using a feature fusion paradigm. In feature fusion, two stimuli are presented in immediate succession. The stimuli ar ...

The visual cortex exhibits functional specialization that can be routinely demonstrated using hemodynamic measures like fMRI and PET. To understand the dynamic nature of cortical processes, however, source imaging with a high temporal resolution is necessa ...

In human vision, the optics of the eye map neighboring points of the environment onto neighboring photoreceptors in the retina. This retinotopic encoding principle is preserved in the early visual areas. Under normal viewing conditions, due to the motion o ...

INTRODUCTION: Contextual processing is often strongly deteriorated in schizophrenic patients as found, for example, in higher cognitive as well as lower visual paradigms. In visual detection tasks, impoverished contextual facilitation was attributed to abe ...

Humans perceive their surrounding environment in a multimodal manner by using multi-sensory inputs combined in a coordinated way. Various studies in psychology and cognitive science indicate the multimodal nature of human speech production and perception. ...

Attentional shifts precede most of the perceptual processes, and therefore their recognition may constitute an interesting process for both the study of human perception as well as the design of EEG-based Brain Computer Interfaces (BCI). Several studies ha ...

To investigate the mechanisms of perceptual learning, we recently introduced a paradigm in which incorrect, reverse feedback followed after some but not all vernier presentations. This feedback paradigm exerted a strong effect on performance that seemed to ...
