This paper presents a solution to overcome the inherently limited bandwidth of substrate-integrated waveguide (SIW) slot antennas. It is analytically shown that by decreasing the permittivity of a dielectric loaded slot antenna, the resulting bandwidth inc ...

Mitigating the energy requirements of artificial intelligence requires novel physical substrates for computation. Phononic metamaterials have vanishingly low power dissipation and hence are a prime candidate for green, always-on computers. However, their u ...

In this thesis work, we propose to exploit an innovative micro/nano-fabrication process, based on controlled fluid instabilities of a thin viscous film of chalcogenide glass. Amorphous selenium and arsenic triselenide were used in this thesis work, and com ...

Strong gravitational lenses provide unique laboratories for cosmological and astrophysical investigations, but they must first be discovered - a task that can be met with significant contamination by other astrophysical objects and asterisms. Here we revie ...

Controlling audible sound requires inherently broadband and subwavelength acoustic solutions, which are to date, crucially missing. This includes current noise absorption methods, such as porous materials or acoustic resonators, which are typically ineffic ...

To date, the vast majority of architected materials have leveraged two physical principles to control wave behavior, namely, Bragg interference and local resonances. Here, we describe a third path: structures that accommodate a finite number of delocalized ...

Recently, there has been growing interest in the use of metamaterial (MTM)-based lenses, also known as metalenses, as innovative antenna technology. Increasingly widespread applications of metalenses in modern microwave communication and sensing systems ha ...

Although graphene has met many of its initially predicted optoelectronic, thermal, and mechanical properties, photodetectors with large spectral bandwidths and extremely high frequency responses remain outstanding. In this work, we demonstrate a >500 gigah ...

This paper presents an innovative approach to creating Shape Memory Alloys (SMA)-based actuators that are lightweight, compact, and capable of providing large strokes. Inspired by the Kirigami structure, an SMA actuator is designed using the Ω -pattern, wh ...

Non-linear materials are cornerstones of modern optics and electronics. Strong dependence on the intrinsic properties of particular materials, however, inhibits the at-will extension of demanding non-linear effects, especially those second-order ones, to w ...

Sensing is the fundamental technique for sensor data acquisition in monitoring the operation condition of the machinery, structures and manufacturing processes. In this paper, we briefly discuss the general idea and advances of various new sensing technolo ...

Magnetic manipulation is a method used for biomedical applications to remotely control micro-robots in a contactless manner. The electromagnet manipulator should control a magnetic field with 3 degrees of freedom inside a region of interest. In various cas ...

Over the past century, our understanding of life has been focused on its most fundamental building blocks: molecules. Biological molecules, such as proteins found in blood, other body fluids, or tissues, are excellent guides to identifying a normal or abno ...

We investigate the ability of human 'expert' classifiers to identify strong gravitational lens candidates in Dark Energy Survey like imaging. We recruited a total of 55 people that completed more than 25 per cent of the project. During the classification t ...

In this work, we show the coherent reconstruction of terahertz (THz) transients in thin-film lithium niobate integrated photonics circuits. Our devices modulate the intensity of a probe beam guided through a Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) structure, und ...

Integrated microring resonators are well suited for wavelength-filtering applications in optical signal processing, and cascaded microring resonators allow flexible filter design in coupledresonator optical waveguide (CROW) configurations. However, the imp ...

Laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) is a powder-based additive manufacturing (AM) technique, which shows great potential in the production of complex-shaped parts with unprecedented design freedom. In addition, it allows for an active manipulation of the micros ...

Context. This paper presents a study of the galaxy Lyman-alpha luminosity function (LF) using a large sample of 17 lensing clusters observed by the Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) at the ESO Very Large Telescope (VLT). The magnification resulting ...

Cavities concentrate light and enhance its interaction with matter. Confining to microscopic volumes is necessary for many applications but space constraints in such cavities limit the design freedom. Here we demonstrate stable optical microcavities by cou ...

Tunable metamaterials functionalities change in response to external stimuli. Mechanical deformation is known to be an efficient approach to tune the electromagnetic response of a deformable metamaterial. However, in the case of large mechanical deformatio ...
