After an initial testing period at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, the upgraded EU 1 MW, 170 GHz continuous wave (CW) industrial prototype gyrotron (TH1509U) for Electron Cyclotron Resonance Heating and Current Drive (ECRH&CD) in ITER has been trans ...

In 2007 a new method to generate optical frequency combs was discovered. In contrast to conventional frequency combs which are generated from pulsed laser sources, these Kerr frequency combs (also known as microresonator frequency combs) are generated enti ...

We present the concept and detailed design of a Smart Slit Assembly for next generation spectrometers, and we experimentally demonstrate operation of an individual 221 mu m x 111 mu m smart slit channel employing a MEMS actuated shutter to continuously mod ...

Modulation instability (MI) as the main limit to the sensing distance of distributed fiber sensors is thoroughly investigated in this thesis in order to obtain a model for predicting its characteristics and alleviating its effects. Starting from Maxwell's ...

High-speed optical interconnects rely on advanced wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) schemes. However, while photonic-electronic interfaces can be efficiently realized on silicon-on-insulator chips, dense integration of the necessary light sources stil ...

In this Letter, we present the photonic nanojet as a phenomenon in a structured light generator system that is implemented to modify the source focal spot size and emission angle. The optical system comprises a microlens array that is illuminated by a focu ...

Recent developments of self-injection locking of a DFB laser with an ultra-high Q resonator have enabled unprecedented low-noise performance of coherent light sources. We review the demonstration of ultra-narrow linewidth laser and microcombs in integrated ...

Optical fibers have reshaped the technological landscape, from optical networks and high-speed data communication to in situ imaging and non-invasive surgery methods. The revolution allowed by these fibers has been made possible by its fabrication method, ...

Advanced optical pulse coding methods to enhance the performance of distributed optical fiber sensors are reviewed. In particular, the latest implementations dedicated to high-performance long-range Raman and Brillouin based distributed sensing are describ ...

We demonstrate the first all-fiber multimode spatiotemporally mode-locked laser. The oscillator generates dissipative soliton pulses at 1036 nm with 12 mW average power, 6.24 ps duration, and 24.3 MHz repetition rate. The reported pulse energy (0.5 nJ) rep ...

Recently, investigation of metasurfaces has been extended to wave control through exploiting nonlinearity. Among all of the ways to achieve tunable metasurfaces with multiplexed performances, nonlinearity is one of the promising choices. Although several p ...

Over the past decade, the properties of plasmonic waveguides have extensively been studied as key elements in important applications that include biosensors, optical communication systems, quantum plasmonics, plasmonic logic, and quantum-cascade lasers. Wh ...

We demonstrate piezoelectric actuators monolithically integrated on ultralow-loss Si3N4 waveguides. Varying the voltage applied on the actuator allows microresonator tuning, and to initiate, switch, stabilize and tightly phase lock the single soliton micro ...

In this letter, we demonstrate experimentally Brillouin echo-distributed sensing based on differential phase-shift keying technique. A positive and negative pulse is applied to a single Mach-Zehnder modulator to achieve a resolution of 5 cm. ...

A novel technique for high-resolution 1.5 mu m photonics-enabled terahertz (THz) spectroscopy using software control of the illumination spectral line shape (SLS) is presented. The technique enhances the performance of a continuous-wave THz spectrometer to ...

Recent advances in the study of synthetic dimensions revealed a possibility to employ the frequency space as an additional degree of freedom which allows for investigating and exploiting higher-dimensional phenomena in a priori low-dimensional systems. How ...

Time-energy entangled photon pairs are fundamental resources for quantum communication protocols since they are robust against environmental fluctuations in optical fiber networks. Pair sources based on spontaneous four-wave mixing in silicon microring res ...

An optical comb consisting of 15 lines within 30 dB was generated with an extremely simple setup, based on the combination of amplified spontaneous Brillouin scattering and 4-wave mixing in optical fibers. ...

We experimentally demonstrate that dissipative Kerr solitons generated in different spectral regions can stably coexist in a single optical microresonator enabling spectral multiplexing of soliton microcombs. (C) 2020 The Author(s) ...

Optical fiber materials with broad-band gain in the visible or in the telecommunication window are of great interest for optical communication or the biomedical domain in order to built integrated tunable lasers, amplifiers, ultra-short pulse lasers, or br ...
